Valby didn’t have to pass anyone. Hedengren did. Hedengren had no pacemaker and led more of the race than Valby did. Advantage Hedengren.
Valby passed 34 runners over the last 12.5 laps. She lapped 12 runners once and 11 runners twice. She lapped the entire field excluding Hutchins by 20:00 and passed Hutchins a few minutes later. The pacemaker probably slowed Valby down. Pacer ran 15:30 the first half; Valby ran 15:20 the second half solo while passing 34 runners, none of whom moved into lave 2.
Comparing Valby's and Hedengren's performances is like comparing Joan Benoit's Olympic victory to Sifan Hassan's. Benoit only ran 2:24:52 while Hasan ran 2:22.55. Despite the slower time, Benoit's performance was superior; she took a commanding lead at 3 miles and ran solo for the next 23, winning by about 1:30. Hassan was pushed the entire race by Assefa, Obiri, and Lokedi, and literally to the finish line by Assefa and won by a couple seconds.
Hedengren's performance was outstanding and slightly faster but was not superior to what Valby did. You might want to rewatch the video of the race.
When Valby set the record, she ran 30:50.43. Second place was Jenna Hutchins in 32:52.01. Valby won by over two minutes and ran nearly the entire race herself. Hedengren was pushed to the absolute limit by Kosgei tonight.
I believe Hedengren is in 30:30 shape and was absolutely not pushed to her limit tonight.
Nah. I was there. Jane was 100% pushed to her limit by Kosgei. Kosgei led at the bell, and Jane and she absolutely threw down on the back stretch. They were running side by side and from across the field (I was at finish line) it looked like they were fully sprinting from 300. Jane pulled away on the turn to bring it home. It wasn't at all like Jane paced Kosgei either, as Kosgei was lead ingfor 9-10 laps total, including the last 3. Plus having Kosgei there at all was obviously huge.
When they finished, Jane looked a little wobbly but fine. Meanwhile, Kosgei collapsed into Jane's arms when Jane went over for a hug. Both were spent.
Also, weather was perfect. No wind at all. None. I don't now if I've ever seen it that still at Stanford, and Stanford is famous for not having wind during the night races. Temp was 60F.
Jane broke Parker Valby’s last standing collegiate record. As a freshmen, she’s the real deal.
Good catch!!
Recall 2 years back, after PV's tear thru the collegiate record books, many were wondering how many years (decades?) it would take for her CRs to be broken.
As it so happened, Doris Lemngole broke Parker's indoor 5000 record less than a year later.
I thought for sure Parker Valby’s records would stand for quite some time. Given she’s the first collegiate female to break 15 in the 5k and 31 in the 10k. Her resume is quite impressive. She still is the only female distance runner to win 5 NCAA titles in a single academic year (XC, 5k/3k indoors, 10k/5k outdoors) culminating in her becoming a 2024 olympian and 2024 bowerman winner. Once Doris broke her 5k record, I really didn’t think anyone would even touch her 10k record for a while. I was wrong. In Jane Hedengren’s 10k DEBUT she broke Parker Valby’s (last) collegiate record which was 30:50 (Now Jane’s 30:46). Given Parker Valby ran 30:50 for her 10k debut with a pacer for the first 5k, then she negative split the first 15:30 to 15:20 running SOLO while passing countless athletes. Would love to see Parker and Jane run against each other some time soon.
Let's see Jane now 7th all time on US 10,000 list and 10th on 5000 list, but prevailing opinion here is that she is not yet fast enough to be a full time pro runner.🤔

And not even two minutes behind world record! Wouldn't even be lapped twice.

I am not surprised. I knew she was capable of the time she ran. If it was more evenly paced she would have given 30:30 a scare. Incredible race!!

…and she was even faster than marathon WR pace. WR pace is 30:47. She ran 30:46.8.
Let’s relax about this going pro thing. She is doing amazing. She is progressing well. It feels like she is in a good environment. She is only a freshman. Let her continue to progress and have fun in the process.

Jane is incredible. What the heck is she going to do the next 3 years of college?? (or 5 or however many seasons they give her at BYU school of the long college careers)

Yes, the “Superior” list complete with “But if”. The only thing that can be analyzed are finishing times and Hedengren is the new collegiate record holder in the 10000m.
If 2024 Valby raced 2026 Hedengren, Jane would win.
