Really mad at Rocky for this cause I picked him in the contest. But just as mad at Fisher and others for not trying to make the team for the home game. We haven't had a World XC in forever and we should have had the dream team.
The alternates are professional athletes. Travel time, enduring stiffness from a long flight, eating like crap at the airport, constipation, being in muggy-ass / flat Florida... just to be an alternate... sounds like an awful departure and a nightmare away from your current training block. If you set yourself up to run a race, and then don't run the race, are you supposed to do a hard workout on your own in Florida that day?

If USATF gives the alternate comped travel to and entry in Club Nats plus maybe a small stipend (don't call it an appearance fee) and goes down the list until someone says yes, they'd always have an alternate to enter. Could've should've done that a month ago.
If true, will Rocky get the Fiona O’Keefe treatment from LRC?
Fiona started an Olympic final, severely limping right out of the gate, and claimed "hip tightness" after the fact. That's deception.
I have not been a fan of hers since. Especially because the alternate was there and ready to run. I have heard the “she earned her right to a payday” argument, and I think it just makes it worse. So she can be referred to as an Olympian? But is she really if she didn’t compete and just limped off the starting line? She had a negative impact on the women’s marathon for the US. Not sure the circumstances are the same with Rocky, but I am so disappointed that he couldn’t run.
Sometimes something has to go wrong before it goes right. An analogy is how the Titanic didn’t have enough lifeboats and then after that happened, maritime law was rewritten so that shipwrecks virtually never happened.
Next time, I’m sure that the alternates will make themselves more available and take that responsibility seriously.
Can these USATF jokers be more incompetent? Why the hell would you not fly the reserve over with the team? Do you know any sport that does not take backups with them when they travel?
It bears repeating, yet again... NOT A REAL PRO SPORT.
That echoes my sentiments too. I know that steeplechaser Duncan Hamilton was submitted to the world championships or Olympics one year when he finished fourth. I’m not sure if that meant he actually went to the location of the Championships.
Once I got sick the weekend before our high school put Together it’s post season lineup, so they threw me a bone and made me an alternate. It was a little bit embarrassing just to show up to the meet in case anyone got sick, so I passed, but I was feeling those guys are more professional than my bratty 16-year-old self was
This is embarrassing for USATF. Imagine showing up to a championship event in a professional sport without an alternate. I can think of no other sport where this would happen. And the event doesn't even require international travel.
My high school XC team would never have been this unprepared for even a low-key invitational.
This event doesn't matter as much as message board dorks think it does. As has been pointed out, any alternates they could have had wouldn't push them closer to the podium. It's okay, just relax.
Anything that is worth doing is worth doing competently. Embarrassing yourself and then deciding after the fact that it's actually ok because whatever you were trying to accomplish wasn't that important is even more embarrassing. There's no shame in competing and losing. There is great shame in being lazy and unprofessional.

I'm sure you're a volunteer in the national office

Nope. But I do my own job competently. I promise that if you ever need a cardiologist and you come to me, I won't approach my work with your sh!tty attitude.

You could always tailor your expectations to reality.

You're hilarious, tough guy keyboard warrior. Regardless of your attitude, I know you'd be apt to neurotically scroll the LRC message board at any moment.
There is zero equivalence between whatever it is that you actually do for a living and how a NGB is run.
Why the f$;@ didn’t he say anything to give Liam Murphy a chance at World’s? F;&(ing bulls048 and stupid on his part. Way to fu38ing go Rocky, way to fu38ing go

Oh yeah? You get to represent your country. STFU and suck it up cupcake.
I heard Rocky thought he would be able to compete. He had planned to compete but got out onto the course yesterday and wasn’t able to go. How is that selfish if that’s true?
Stress reaction means... he knew he couldn't run, but wanted to go and get his team swag and name on the World XC t-shirt, or whatever it is.
Can we as a country and an organization still recognize this guy MADE the team, still give him his team swag (because he earned the spot), let him travel and be a part of the mix, be announced on the World XC brochures, but not make him fear giving up his spot and forfeiting all that, so we can responsibly send a full team?? For goodness sake, man!
I don't blame him. He earned the spot. But let's make it work for both him and the team.
Yeah it seems weird, he’s on the start list as a DNS, did he just want to get his name listed before he told them? What is he even doing there, free trip? you know you can’t run with that and could have told them so someone else had a chance.

One time in high school, I was the alternate for our team at the county XC champs. I ran a local 10k at 9am that day then showed up for the county champs at noon and the coach was pi$$ed when I told him what I’d done. They didn’t need me and then you know what I did with that flute….

Get real.
We all know that you would have a damn good idea if you're able to run or not, at some point before um THE DAY BEFORE THE RACE when he finally notified USATF.
Without further information this doesn't reflect well on character.
