David Morris ran and won a local 5K yesterday with 300 participants. It was only his third race in two years. The race was probably not too obscure - it served as the AK state 5K championships, had some prize money, and the defending champion ran 14:47 last year (but only 3rd in 15:23 this year).
Henry Rono showed up at an Ann Arbor Track Club "Tuesday Night Fun Run" in the early eighties. Henry was the WR holder for two or three distances at that time. Henry had exhausted his elgibility at Washington State and trying to get into graduate school at UM or EMU. He ran the 5k and paced several younger runners. I think a picture of the finish may still be hanging in a local running store.

It was in the Bethel 10K (CT). The race was won by Dan Sclessinger (29:16 10K runner) and it was in the late 70s.
...but all of 5 pages of these high-lights combined just add up to about a typical 1 year span of little road races in the Boulder area.

Those were the days CentroDog used to work at the adidas running camp at Cantebury School in New Milford. Over the course of a week, he and Bill Dellinger used to hold some marathon drinking/poker/darts sessions, often 'til 3 in the morning, then they'd be up before 7 to lead the campers in their first run of the day. My guess is he showed up in Bethel at the end of the camp week, and was pretty pre-toasted before the gun went off.
The old Bethel course was one mean MF'er to be sure.
Maria Trujillo was a dead ringer if she showed up around Monterey races during the 90's
I was at a weeknight pickup track meet somewhere in NJ one summer in the 1960's and was watching the half mile being run at maybe a 2:05-2:10 pace. With half a lap left, some guy takes off and leaves everyone like they were standing still. His last 220 must have been 22-23 seconds and appeared all the more stunning given the pace up to that point. Later I found out it was Ron Freeman, who subsequently took 3rd place in the 1968 Olympic 400 behind Lee Evans and Larry James!
A few years ago a guy posted a $100 bonus for anyone breaking the course record at a Hartford Track Club winter series half marathon - pretty low-key/small race. The record holder was the former boyfriend of the the guy who posted the bonus -- The former boyfriend had apparently been making a nuisance of himself. Anyway the course was extremely hilly and actually a bit longer than 13.1 so his 1:13 record was a very good performance. The guy posting the bonus also lobbed in a call to Gideon Mutisya, who was living in the area and let him know that there was $100 available for doing a tempo run. Mutisya showed up, ran a 1:12, was his usual gracious self, and walked away with the $100. Pretty hilarious day.
I ran the Lake Channohan(sp?) 10k in Illinois, somewhere around 1991 or so, with another 200 runners. I was probably 10th in 34 minutes, and Dick Beardsley was probably 3rd or 4th in 33 flat or something. It was a year or two after his farming accident, and obviously, several years after his "duel in the sun." I got his picture with me afterwards....a very nice guy...

Jon Sinclair (Colorado) showed up in Pierre, SD to show some locals how to run 8 miles back in '78.
Bo Reed in just about any race in Arizona.
Lance has actually been beaten in the mountain bike / run duathlon in Texas a couple of years. I think the same guy beats him each time he does it.
i hit this backroad 5k in the western part of germany last year. there's not really much talent in the area and there was only 300 euros for the winner. there was an "elite 5000" scheduled where the you needed under 15 to get in. i was in decent shape but more of marathon type fitness, enough i thought to win. when the race time came 14 kenyans, 1 dutchman, 1 german and myself the american toed the line. winner of this nothing race was James Kwalia C'Kurui---a 13:01 5k racer. that was some bullshit. i ran 14:37 and was second to last. i didn't stick around to see how fast 1st was. i remember thinking the first 400 was a .57 or something. since then i've found out the hard way that a lot of kenyans live around me during the track season.
Mid 80's...the St. Patty's Day 10 miler in Kutztown Pa., winner gets a plane ticket to Ireland.
Marcus O'Sullivan shows up, not even in "distance" shape, and smokes the field. I think he ran 48:30's...
I think Lincoln's extremely solo 13:56 has to top the list.

I think Lance has actually only lost once at the Dirty Duathlon, and that was due to a punctured tire on the bike. Guess they didn't have team support cars out there. Someone did beat his course record last year or the year before, but that is so dependent on conditions that's it's somewhat meaningless.
In 1974 or 1975, I went to a local meet in New Jersey where they were giving out cheap watches to the winner. Figured I'd do the mile, even though I normally was more of a 1/2 mile type. Who shows up for the mile and smokes it, but Marty Liquori. Did something like 4:15, looking like he was jogging.
The funniest thing I ever saw at a race was in hte early 80's when Rick Sayre pulled up to a 10k in Bedford(hometown of Halle Berry, yummy) on his loud Harley. He had on some tattered jeans and a black leather jacket and scruffy beard. Everyone looked at him like he'd come to the wrong place. He pulled his jeans off and jacket and proceeded to blow everyone's doors off. It was hilarious.
