Question for me now is - did he make the right move with the info he had at the time? Obviously didn't work out, but does seem like he had to do something to give himself a shot
Probably the correct call. I just wish we could transport these officials through time so they could go back and DQ Paul Chelimo when he was still in championship finals. His moves were a lot worse than Hocker’s. Not saying they got the wrong call here, but they clearly had the wrong call in pretty much every championship race Chelimo ran.
That’s not a DQ. Lol, come on. People are racing and jockeying for position. Sometimes you just have to use common sense… You have to really shove someone, hit someone or do something that is a very very very drastic impediment to get disqualified from a race. It would be absurd to be setting that as the precedent for a disqualification going forward.
I am not familiar with the particulars of contact in middle distance racing, what in particular makes that a DQ, from the front angle it looks like he kind of just slips through the gap without impeding either runner on the left or right.
The front angle is misleading.
Thank you for admitting what others in the thread were trying to convey with regard to the clip wejo posted.

all i see in the clip is standard issue jockeying for position. no thrown elbows, no shoving, no hitting or purposeful tripping or anything out of trying to occupy a line. this is BS

It is a pretty obvious DQ. If you employ bad tactics and get yourself boxed in, don't expect to be permitted to grab other runners while you attempt to squeeze by. If he wants to refrain from leading and hug the rail he will do so at his own peril.
Judges are going to do what judges are going to do, but it sure looked like Semer impeded Mitua in the steeplechase in a very similar way, so why wasn't he DQed?

As others are saying, wejo’s clip does not show Hocker “grabbing other runners”.
That’s a bad angle from the front. You can see it better from the side. Definitely a DQ, unfortunately.
The front is the best angle as it shows exactly how much shoulder room they have. The side angle compresses things and makes the lanes look half as wide as they actually are.
Everyone who's ever run on a track knows you can easily fit two runners in a lane. Look at the video, prior to Hocker's move Nillessen was on the inside of lane 1 and both of Farken's feet are in lane 2. Nillessen tries to hold off Hocker by sliding right a bit, which led to Hocker rubbing elbows with Farken.
Ridiculous to DQ someone for such minor contact when no one fell, no one broke stride, no one was pushed or shoved, and the only runner who might have been affected admits he was already falling back on his own accord.
Admittedly, I thought it looked a lot worse in real time. In hind sight, not much happened.
Go to 4:45 of the video to see it in slow motion. Very little contact by Hocker which should not have been a DQ. FAAAARRR more goes on in every race that don't get DQ's.
His ridiculous tactics have finally bitten him in the backside. Passing on the inside and running up the back of people should have been squelched a long time ago.
