3M half marathon suprising results

AND wejo, you're not impressed by the Kenyans run at 3m. Well, whoopeee. Give you a brownie. Race me and I'll kick your ass.

No doubt the 3M is easier than the WR half. I, too, expected to run 2 min. faster, but my early pace ruined that for me. It was my own fault.

Are you running Cowtown? I'm running the half there, too.

... Where is the Cowtown race ran? Dallas right? Next up for myself personally is the Rodeo Run 10K in Houston. Great course, great enviorment and crowds, a nice fast flat course. One of my favorite races all year.

where does the 3M organizing committee actually make that statement about the course diversion? I can't find it. I'd like to see it for myself.

How's the head doing this morning? I'll take you up on your little challenge but there must be andro testing afterwards, no one gets an unfair advantage! Pesonally a short, long, or accurate course didn't affect me since I was not there but you know as well as I do how well you ran or how well you didn't run based on who you beat and who beat you. Are you running x-c nationals in a few weeks? If so I will see you there but I will not let you drag me on a 9 mile cool down afterwards.

The head is alright, it's the bowels that are killing me. Unfair advantage? Isn't nationals going to be held on your new home course that you run on every day? That sounds like and advantage to me. However, I guess it would be a disadvantage to train in NYC. It wasn't a great race. Lots of people I never heard of who kicked my ass. Look at John Supsic, Nate Jenkins, and Josh Ordway. Never heard of these guys, but they ran great. I am trying to make it to XC nationals. But I spent all our mileage on the flight to Austin, so I won't be able to make the trip unless I can get on a team or something. No moulah. It'd be the first time running there since being a mountie. You guys never ran at VCP @ school did you? Anyway, hope to see you there and if I do beat you, you should run that 9-mile cool-down w/me.

Actually I am a Bronx-dweller, 4 blocks up the hills from VCP. Yes,

I ran there for Big East in 95 but now run there everyday. If you can make it out let me know, and if you need a place to crash you can stay here. My e-mail hasn't changed so fire me one off if you still have it. Hope you can make it out and IF I lose to you I will attempt the 9 mile cool down, which means I will either need to: 1. cut the warm up short, 2. cut the race short, or 3. beat you. I like option 3! Good luck with your training and hope to see you in a couple weeks.

Now that you're sober, could you translate your first message? By the way, not that I care, but wejo actually said that he was impressed by the Kenyan winner, but unimpressed by the race organizers' screw-ups. So don't be getting riled up over nothing. Save it for real battles, like debates over downhill courses.

What are you doing these days? The last that I recall, you were doing something unserious like duathloning. I imagine that wouldn't pay the rent, even in the worst sections of the Bronx.

A friend ran a fairly large and well known trail fifty miler with a Garmin and discovered that it was about 4 miles or so short. Lots of course changes the next year. Although I don't race with a Garmin I do find it is a great resourse for measuring new runs.

Thanks for the explaination. I guess I have just always trusted the race distance to be close to the distance advertized, and always sort of saw road racing as more similar to cross country (more about place than time) since there is so much variation from course to course. From this tread it seems like my trust may be misplaced. Didn't mean to knock the GPS, I've just never seen anyone actually using one and it struck me as sort of a gimmick. Personally, I prefer to just go by time for my normal runs because if I actually knew the distance for my everyday routes I think I'd end up running too hard trying to better my runs from previous weeks. To each his own though.

My next one will be the Texas half - I am not going to race it, but use it as a tempo/long run - since it is only 2 weeks from the 3M. The cowtown in Ft. Worth is a challenging course I last heard, with a lot of hills (I never ran it myself). I am a 5K/track type guy and I will focus on 5K more until July when the racing season is over.

I ran the first 9.8 miles on a relay last year. If memory serves, the first couple of miles are down or flat. You can establish a good fair pace. Some sharp short hills later. I'm not sure where therelay split from the half course - - maybe 7 or 8 miles. The course is not easy, but it's not a maneater either. What time are you aiming for?

Based on the "S," I think you have the wrong person. I have never done a duathlon, although my running has been unserious.

Sam is in Maui and has been for about 1.5 years now and last I heard he wasn't traing at all, unless you consider bikini watching cross training.

Oldguy - I'm with you on this one. Claiming a PR on a course that is net downhill, short, or illegitimate for some other reason is silly. I'm just surprised that people have trouble grasping that. Putting the competition aside, why does one get satisfaction in pretending they accomplished something they didn't?

I really don't care if most people want to live a lie, but it does irk me when some compare their bogus PRs to legitimate accomplishments of others. That's when it goes too far.

In the DC area we have a guy named James Moreland (see the thread about him) that constantly brags about his "PRs" of 15 years ago, which were primarily run on downhill and uncertified courses. He uses these bogus measures to justify why he is a superior runner to someone else that may have slower, but legitimate PRs. Its pathetic, but there are plenty of other James out there.

This is the first time I run this, so have no idea how the course is like, but as I mentioned, I will use this as a training run, so I might just start with 6'50" or so pace and keep a comfortable hard pace. If I hit 1:28 or faster, I will be happy. Are you going to run it as well?
