Recruiting for junior girl, preferably southeast or mountain west

Please provide the name of the school because I will send you 2 girls that fast who are willing to come for 50%.

Kids and parents come here for advice but don't get much. These people were hoping that somebody would give the names of some programs who are legitimately looking for girls of that level. I coach at the HS level and can assure you that there are no full rides for these girls. I have had girls start at JUCOs and take small scholarships at D2 schools. They aren't contacting name brand schools. They are willing to go anywhere.

Your daughter is fast enough to make D1 teams. 5:01 won't get her money but it should get her a roster spot as a recruited walk on for a number of programs.

When you say she has a high ACT is that say 32 or above? If money is a concern I would look at schools with automatic merit scholarships. There are P5 schools that will give significant academic scholarships that she could likely get a roster spot on.

So it's hard to really say what the scoop is here... I'm guessing everyone is partially correct with the answers. You are correct in that there aren't many schools out there that will give a full athletic scholarship to a 5:01 SA but there are probably a few. There are more that could give a 5:01 SA some athletic scholarship money and some academic aid... many more. There are also plenty out there that will be able to help a small amount ... and even more that would let a 5:01 walk on.

There is something off here... not sure what but I would imagine that the SA is either contacting the wrong person at the schools in question (many times it's better to contact the assistant vs the HC) or the SA has too narrow of a wish list.

I am a coach (not HS) and I have tried to give positive feed back to both help help and Sat... Since I am a coach I can not and will not give specific names of schools for them to contact. I can't because it's against NCAA rules but I can guarantee they are out there... they will both be able to find a fit if they look and expand the list of schools.

It's very unlikely they will find a place that is free but there are plenty of places that are good academic schools that would be happy to add a 5:01 SA to their roster.

I agree with this all. I would be curious to read the email they are sending out. Their experience just isn't typical from the athletes of similar caliber that I've coached and are currently going through the recruiting process. I will say that the COVID year and change in transfer rules has made recruiting tougher.

It's also important to remember that not all 5:01 milers are created equally. Are they from a notoriously high mileage HS program? Are their other PRs relatively slower? Are they consistently a sub 5:05 miler or are they usually a 5:10-15 miler that had one good day? How long have they been running for? When in their career did they run the 5:01? How have they performed in championship races? Are there concerns over health?

I am a boys' high school coach but talk frequently to the girls' coach. She has two senior girls currently around the level as others in this thread. She expressed the same issue. The girls have sent out nice messages to coaches and recruiting coordinators and they have completed questionnaires to dozens of colleges. Something seems to have really changed over the past two years or so. They normally would have had no problem finding a home but they are struggling to find a home. There seems to be at least a half dozen girls in this thread going though this situation. I can only assume that Covid has caused many coaches to shut down recruiting for a while. We aren't talking about scholarships which many of you are confusing with just getting a spot. Interestingly, I have a boy on the team who signed a small NLI last week with his dream school.

There has to be some impact, I think it is starting to work itself out now, but so many 5th and 6th year Seniors competing the last 2 years. Also maybe impacted by the pandemic too, everything is deeper and faster than it was just 2 years ago. Maybe 4:55 is the new 5:05.

Update. She has contacted nearly every coach imaginable and recevied responses from 2 more elite schools but no response whatsoever from dozens of other coaches.

The biggest issue is most D1 programs aren't going to do much as far as contact until they are done with their junior year. Most programs if interested will invite a kid for an official in the fall of their senior year. They also can't give any scholarship $ amount until Aug 15th of their senior year.

She is a senior.

At this point in the year she is likely not going to get much attention from many D1 programs. Most have given most schlorship money already or are looking at transfers. I would look at D2 or some NAIA programs but you will be disappointed if you are expecting a D1 offer at this point. We have some friends and have been committed for almost a month.

I try to get back to everyone who sends me an email and I certainly get back to any senior who ran 5:0x as a junior. No reason not to.

Do keep in mind what I said earlier... she still does have time even if it doesn't feel like it to her.

She isn't looking at D2 or NAIA. She has a very high ACT and is a 4.0 student. she has been offered a spot at 2 highly selective colleges but the price is around $300k. We have a son who is a D1 runner so we have been through the process before. The point I have been conveying here is how inconsiderate coaches have been this time around. My daughter has contacted about 75 coaches over the past 6 months and recevied only a handful of responses. The rest literally did not respond. She isn't looking for a scholarship, just a roster spot at an average school that charges a reasonable price. It really seems that coaches forgot how to communicate post Covid. I don't know if it was due to the coaches being isolated for a year. Several posters in this thread have coummunicated similar experiences. My daughter can attend our state school for very littel money but of course the coach hasn't responded to email or their questionnaire. She can attend a great academic school at $300k and can compete. There were may more options for my son a few years ago.

I would suggest letting her high school coach help with contacting college coaches. There are definitely coaches schools that she could run at and get a partial scholarship. He coach can, and should, be willing to handle communicating with college coaches. This is what my coach did with. Division 1 school out of high school. When I transferred, I just emailed the head and assistant coaches at two more D1, lower level schools, and again, had no problem getting them to respond.

IN Utah, obviously you'll want to look at Weber State, USU, southern Utah. Dixie State (now Utah Tech).

She has probably been blacklisted for some reason.

My guess is that the parents are way to involved in the recruiting process. College coaches will distance themselves from helicopter parents. I think from the info you have put on here there is something you are leaving out. Either her email or approach is not professional, but there is a reason then all aren't responding.

like someone said look at the team rankings to see what schools may be interested… probably schools in the 12-20 range at xc regional in a decent region… schools higher than 12 will likely not give her money or maybe even a roster sport and teams outside the top 20 will not have any money to offer that is why they are not good.
