So many of you are throwing deference to the DL athletes as if they are royalty.
They are professional athletes.
They know the rules and know the stakes.
The rules more than likely should be relaxed for the dual meet.
In Diamond League, it's not a production. It's working for a pretty hefty paycheck and a bigger one if you are the leader at the end of the series.
Bromell (and Hughes) were not wronged here.
The rule is not stupid at any level. Plus, it's a rule. Why wait to question it for an athlete you like rather than every athlete.
Your take is far too selfish individualist American for me. Rules are collectivist...for the good of the whole.
This rule is good for the good of the whole...it keeps athletes honest.
This rule is not for “the good of the whole.” It’s bad for the athletes, coaches, fans, meet directors and sponsors. Were “intentional” false starts a crippling problem 2003-9? Was the false start rate in DL/championship races much higher then than now? If this was a problem, I contend you could mitigate it by only allowing 1-2 false starts during a DL season before an athlete would be automatically dq’d. You know, like having a foul to give in basketball before FTs. This would stop recurrent abusers, but make it less likely any star misses out on a race because of an unintentional false start. You really think the one and done rule is integral to the integrity of the sport? I don’t care at all about Bromell as an individual athlete, I would not want any of the athletes to go out in this way. I want to see them race. Don’t you?
