Tell me how I'm wrong: Keira D'Amato's record is the coolest story in the sport this century

Rags to riches? I don't know about that. Seems like she was living a pretty cushy upper-middle class life as a mom/relator then caught the running bug again and responded well to her training.

Boris Berian could have been a better story, working at Micky D's and all but his success was very short lived. Still probably made enough to better his situation.

You guys spend every podcast talking about the advantage given from super shoes yet this is somehow the most impressive story of the decade/century?

Obviously it’s a great story and incredible run, but it’s not as impressive as Kastor’s record or Flanagan winning New York or Seidel medaling IMO.

She was probably burned out from running so taking a long time off really helped her recover physically and mentally.

That increase in testosterone lasts 7 years?

Not this Century, but A High School kid runs his best High School Time 9:36, goes to College gets his 2 Mile time down to 8:58 his Senior year of College, quits running becomes a Special Education Teacher does no running, gets into a smoking habit, one day after not running for I believe 5-6 years, his car breaks down, so he decides to run to work, really enjoys it so gradually he increases his running by not running directly to school, does out of the way loops to Lengthen his run, sets a goal of 20 miles a day, gets up to 10 in the morning and 10 in the afternoon for 20 miles a day, eventually he enters a race, he does good so he runs more races eventually winning the Boston AND New York Marathon 4 Times EACH and Fukuoka once and those were BY FAR the most competitive and prestigious Marathons of that Era, except for the once every 4 Years Olympic Marathon, he also got 3rd in World Cross Country about 3 weeks before winning Boston for the First time in Course Record time 2:09.55, In 1976 he runs the Sedo Island Marathon in Japan, the World Record at the time was 2:08.33 by Derek Clayton of Australia, he wins in 2:08.23 but no World Record as the Course after being remeasured is 100-200 Meters short.

Thank you! 4:28 in hs, unremarkable D3 career, overweight and smoking packs of Winston’s every day…..then becomes arguably America’s greatest marathon runner and definitely the goat to my generation of runners. Trained on pizza and beer. Ran for a living, constantly racing. In today’s environment he’d easily hold the AR and have the better of Rupp and Hall.

Why aren't more people commenting on here about Lopez. Abducted away from his family, spent years in a refugee camp in Kenya, came to the US, and eventually becoming a US citizen in '07. Maybe he doesn't have the flashiest times or the medals like Hassan or Gidey but he's been a 2x Olympian, set multiple national records, and is one of the most humble and hardworking athletes the US has to offer.

Agreed, d’Amato’s story is remarkable, but no more so than the journey of Bill Rodgers, Sifan Hassan and many others, particularly women from east Africa. Sensationalizing today’s performance seems a bit…off.

A 2:19 (low!) was a long time coming from a North American woman. Going forward, how many of these continental athletes will smash d’Amato’s mark--given access to the best shoes--in the next 5--8 years? I say all but one.

Keira's story is interesting, but there are so many in track and most are not American-centric.

Keira's story is especially interesting to the Lululemon crowd. Followed her husband's career around and had kids, and now she can chase her own dreams -- and an American record. It's cute! Until she gets popped.

It's a fun story, but not even the best story in American track and field in the last 6 months

Athing Mu, daughter of refugees and wins 800m Olympic Gold front running the whole dang thing to break her own US medal, before anchoring the 4x400 to gold.... AGED 19.

Also arguably Molly Seidel and again that's just the US, and just in the last 6months.
