Why "runners" hate ultrarunners?

ya it is a valid point. people who are good at the ultra the have an incredable ability to metabolize fats.

people who are good at distance running have great aerobic systems. sprinters have tons of fast twich muscles. what it takes to be good at the ultra is very dofferent then what it takes to be good at the 10k. I would pose that people good at the ultra are just taking advantage of their God given abilities.

If your line of thinking is correct...then aren't you distance runners just being a bunch of panzies by not springing and competing in the 100 or 200? Why then run the 5k, 10k, or marathon? 400m is long enough.

I think a lot of marathoners (including myself), start out just to run one, then just want to get faster.

I think a lot of ultrarunners (including myself), start out just to run one, then find they really enjoy the differences between this form of running and marathons. Also road 50miles, 100k are more like marathons as have to really push all the way, move up from their and it's more fun and easier on the body.

I have huge respect for all runners who stick with it, enjoy themselves....

If you think ultra runners get "undeserved" attention, then why don't you show up and try to grab it from them?

And just for fun, what makes Alan Webb's attention so much more deserved? He gets his ass kicked by international competition again and again. I bet not a single non-US commentator or jounalist has ever considered him a candidate for a major championship. So he's the best US middle distance runner. Big f-ing deal. That's like being the best US soccer player.

If you want to go have a beautiful nine-hour spiritual ramble in the woods, go ahead. But then don't come on here begging or demanding more respect.

Obviously any reasonably intelligent runner understands and respects the challenges involved in running 100 miles. It's a different world -- but it's a world that's nowhere near as competitive as the shorter distances. Now, you can either say, "Yes, it is as competitive," or, "So what, we don't care about competition." But you can't say both.

To you haters: "Someday you will understand"!

I can say BOTH, and see and understand both, you are right, marathoners tend to be a lot more competitive and externally focused/recognised. Whereas a lot of ultrarunners don't care or get a lot out of beating others, rather turn more inwardly and enjoy the journey/experience. Why can't I say/do both, picking I can and am !

I don't really respect peoples times so much even in marathons, that's mainly genetic, I mean you can only really run your pace or improve it a lot towards your potential, dosn't really have much to do with being competitive either you can run 2hr 20min or more likely 3hr 20 or 4hr 20 or not, that's all, I have more repect for the consistent effort, improvement and joy of running regardless of distances. This is where maybe I respect SOME ultrarunners more than SOME marathoners as you can see more huge efforts and improvements and you know they are not worried about beating others, just challenging themselves to/beyond their limits
