I think this is the most likable Pope in modern times even for those that aren’t religious.
For faithful Catholics, Pope Francis is probably the most disappointing pope in several centuries. I admire Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI much more, and think John Paul II was much more liked than Francis is. Popularity is not always characteristic of something virtuous and the virtuous are not always popular. And popularity can be fickle. Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem with admirers waiving palm fronds and the next week was killed on a cross.
Most of us are a mixed lot. Consider the following:
Christianity Ronaldo: Has hundreds of millions of admirers and for many reasons rightly so. He’s great at his sport and in many ways very disciplined ( diet, training, abstinence from alcohol). I believe he’s a blood donor. Yet he has four kids by three women and paid one woman circa $375,000 to settle a charge of sexual assault .
Lionel Mess: Doesn’t seem as concerned as Ronaldo about building a following yet in my mind the greatest ever at his sport. But even he had kids before marriage.
Gotta go! Have more to write.
