So, it sounds like Deena hopped on Verran's back and was piggy-backed the last couple of miles.
I'm sure she knew exactly what was going on behind her without Verran's help. Someone of her ability doesnt go to a race alone. She has a team with her that is constantly getting information to her. There's also some very knowledgable fans along the course who are prob listening to the race on the radio and are able to relay some good info to Deena. If all that didnt work, she could turn around herself and take a good look.
Bottom line is that there are factors that keep from allowing perfect conditions to occur in a road race (hills, weather, turns, other runners, spectators). To be a good road racer, a runner must utilize these imperfect conditions and be able to take full advantage of them.
By the way, do you want the prize money going to an American or to some third-worlder who couldnt find Chicago on a map?

It's nothing like that. This was not a team event. It was a major marathon.
Any force you guys think your argument has is deflated by Deena's performance in the Olympics. She ran in a straight-up, tough as hell, race with no men or pacers in it, and got a bronze medal. She has proven her worth when it counts, so trying to argue that she needs help to succeed is an empty argument.
Chicago is about running fast. Deena was ambitious and wanted to make her mark. It was an impressive run. She was only off her personal best by a few ticks, and would have surely smashed that if she wasn't so ambitious. But she was ambitious, and thank goodness she is and not afraid to give a go at something truly impressive.
If any of the other women wanted to bear her, they were more than free to do so.

the olympics are irrelevant. i am still waiting for someone to cite what rule was broken. i also don't understand why the same people aren't up in arms when el g or kb breaks a wr on the track after following a squadron of guys through pre-determined splits. that just seems so unfair to have someone to draft off of and doing all the work for you. going forward, all races should be solo time trials so we can avoid any outside help.
I give Deena all the credit. No one complains about 3:40 marathoners who are constantly in a pack of runners helping each other out, so why should Deena's situation be any differnt? Deena placed third in the Olympics, she pushed herself in the end and passed Paula et al. She didn't break any rules as far as I'm concerned. So much else happening in the world of running in the past two weeks, so I'm not sure why this thread was brought up.
Sorry I've been out all day. Sounds like Deena cheated in the Marathon. What did she do, take a cab, cut the course, trip someone, EPO??????

Ummmm......no.
Pacing is an accepted practice. I believe in European races it is almost expected for the women to have male pace setters. And I highly doubt that the Chicago Marathon has any rules against pace setting.
In going back to a previous post of mine, how effecive was Verran's pacing? Deena was in the middle of a death march already. She was not going to go any faster.

Yeah, a shocker - a huge battle waged at a crazy pace between two of the best marathoners in the world in one of the sport's pre-eminent events, and someone noticed. Next thing you know, people will be looking for results of Olympic finals within a week or two of their being run.
I don't think Clint Verran would have done the same thing for Dita if she had been in the lead and starting to slow. Run the same race a hundred times, and the advantage goes to the Deena. The American helped out the American. I don't think that's cool.
Just a couple of points to ponder concerning today's race:
1. A male "pacing" a female in a major marathon is going to be of no help whatsoever when the monkey jumps on her back. No amount of "strategy" can make her legs run any faster. Fans on the course were probably about just as much help.
2. Deena went through the half in 1:09 on a course that is well known for the chance to run a negative split. A bit overzealous on her part. Also, she ran a new American record for the half marathon a couple of weeks before Chicago.
Those things considered, she was gutsy to hang on as she did. Anyone who has felt it all come aprt at 23 miles can empathize.
3. Anybody notice that when Dita first broke through, it was a 10 minute PR??? Pretty significant training strategy change.
