I am saddened, but not surprised, to read of all the injuries afflicting this wonderful group. It's no surprise because we are well into the competitive season and folks of our age don't always tolerate the additional stress well.
Though I respect everyone’s individual choice, the injury risk associated with this type of load at this age was one of the most compelling reasons in my decision to step back from competitive racing. For me the likelihood of substantial down time in exchange for being able to go online and brag about winning my age group - even when there was only one eligible participant! - just wasn't worth it.
So I enjoy my moderately paced strolls around the local streets and trails while leaving the heavy lifting to others. I will continue to root for the serious runners here and fervently support your competitive efforts from afar. And I'll watch the WC and other elite competitions while recalling the days of yore.
Here's hoping for quick recoveries for all.
