That would flatten out prices over the year. But, oh my, company money would be spent on nasty infrastructure (oil storage). Why spend the money equipment when it is easier to raise prices? Which leads to higher profit for the Republican loved Free-Market oil companies?

He used mommy's credit card to buy gas when Dotard Donnie was president. This summer is the first he has paid for his own gas and now the price bothers him.

I bet it is awesome to pay 3x gas prices, rack up expensive repair charges in the first months of ownership, have a manufacturer over charge a $700 fix for $16,000,💰💰💰💰pay twice for a feature, 💰💰💰💰have to pay $10,000 or $200/month for a feature that doesn’t work💰💰💰💰💰, not be able to park your car in your garage or near anything combustible because the manufacturer says it might blow up, 🔥🔥🔥🔥 . I bet it is awesome to pay 7x electricity prices, rack up expensive repair charges at twice the rate of an EV, get ripped off at the dealership, pay for features that don't work, and worry about your car catching on fire at 11x the rate of EV's.

BTW, my Full Self Driving package works pretty well right now and it keeps getting better over time without paying anything extra. Name me any gas car that gets better the longer you own it. Mine does.

Here is a really simply market principal you "might" be able to grasp. Let prices rise rather than spend money on capital. equipment. This is a business fundamental that even oil fundamentals follow. There never is a shortage of gasoline during the summer. You just pay a higher price, everywhere.

But supply-demand theory requires a shortage to justify higher prices. But that is NOT how the oil industry works.

He has no explanation why supplies never dwindle when prices are jacked up because of demand.) Tell him to look up the phrase "Whatever the market will bear". [Secret hint: exploitation of the market.]

there is a new and interesting dynamic in the oil biz. Could change, but for now:

1/ Oil companies have accepted that oil will be less in demand in the decades to come.

2/ Therefore oil companies are not spending the usual billions they spend to find new oil fields. Why spend that money if demand will fall in the future? And better to use those billions to sort out how the oil companies can survive in a new energy world.

3/ So when there is a price spike like this...there are fewer fields that are available to come on line. Often there are fields that have been found but are only viable at, say $70 oil. Normally they stay fallow, but are turned on when oil goes high like now. But because of lower spending by oil companies, there are fewer fallow fileds to turn on.

4/ So the supply does s not come up as it has in the past. So prices may stay higher, longer.

Point is, it could be different this time.

A higher gas price does decrease demand. But only to a point.

Prices are manipulated by governments and oil companies. Foreign suppliers have a huge choke hold on our economy. American soldiers die for the benefit of hostile governments with oil wealth.

We should just stop buying the stuff.

I doubt the dynamic you describe has much effect right now, but it is definitely the future. Stranded oil and gas assets will be littering and poisoning the world's landscape for years to come.
