American men's long jumpers SUCK !!! Jesse Owens jumped farther...87 YEARS AGO!!! PATHETIC.
If you think this is bad, you should see how pathetic the high school level has gotten. Used to see 7.3 to 7.5 for state level jumpers. I recently saw a big school division in a big state have a 6.7 win it.
In my home state back in the late 1980's we had a small high school of about 600-800 students (2A was category) that had like 3 guys long jumping over 23' and triple jumping over 50'...and all 3 could run about 10.5, 21.5, 49 FAT. Crazy good. Greg Yeldell who once held the national high school 'record' for TJ at about 53"11? went there. So yeah, American jumping has fallen off a little. Have to agree with you.
Owen's is STILL #3 on the all-time Ohio legal HS long jump list with his 24' 11 1/4" National HS record in early June of 1933. Held the Ohio State meet tournament record for 44 years (1933-1977) @ 24' 3 3/4" until Todd Bell (Middletown) broke it with his 24' 6 3/4".
Vitriol from this board aside (which is mostly from the excessive NBC coverage), she's quality on the commentary. At minimum a huge improvement from whoever was on before, and a bit more actual insight than Kara provides.

But but but but the shoes !!! Cheater shoes mean subtract 2cm off each jump!!!
That is her. Those shoulders are skinny men shoulders. Google Image search her anme. I had to do a double take. But I guess they're allowed to compete in longer races. That is the new IAAF ruling right?

North Rowan HS? That place is legendary for its triple jumpers. I think they have 5 or 6 guys who have gone over 50'. Ridiculous for such a small school.
