You know, before the last year, or so, I think that most sane Americans (and the subset thereof not utterly unwilling to acknowledge cultural short comings in other countries) would have assumed that our NON-banana republic status was due to BOTH our superior "system" (rule of law, checks and balances, etc.), AND a "better" citizenry, at least with respect to understanding and supporting positive governmental/legal systems.

But Trumpism really makes me wonder if we were and are giving ourselves too much credit. Do we ACTUALLY have a lower proportion of autocrat-supporting mouth breathers than the average banana republic? Don't know. And hell, maybe we have MORE, because maybe some/lots FINALLY come to their senses when they see what a less constrained autocrat can REALLY do (....and it's TOO LATE, of course).

We are losing unity in this country at an accelerating pace and a lot of it has to do with extreme politics. The Rs couldn't figure out an appealing platform decades ago and started gaslighting. Instead of good policies, they filled the void with white outrage and let themselves be taken hostage by trump and now fully embrace outright lying. We are considered a flawed democracy but we can all now see how we can have an authoritarian regime. Had the election results not been certified and coup attempt, with the right still supporting trump this much.. we'd be that much closer to saying sayonara to our system.

Because AZ and other states have had time tested election processes with lots of controls and backstop processes to ensure any errors or fraud are immaterial. Not to mention that in particular for 2020 even with all the scrutiny and recounts and lawsuits, nothing was found. Tzees are desperately hanging on to hope, but they'll have to latch on to some other lie to stay invested in trumpism.
