Your point is clear enough. The value of years lived later in life is infinitely less than the value of years lived early in life.

Expanding that line of thought, if "life expectancy" is our main criteria, then we really shouldn't care for instance that the Coronavirus is having a huge effect on the restaurant industry. Here is a quote from a 2018 article from USA today:

"Both Perry Group International and The Restaurant Brokers have completed studies on the average life span of restaurants. Their results are slightly different but show the same trend. The Perry Group study concluded that most restaurants close during their first year of operation. Seventy percent of those that make it past the first year close their doors in the next three to five years.... The Restaurant Brokers’ study, the only one to make a distinction between chain and independent restaurants, concluded that up to 90 percent of independent establishments close during the first year, and the remaining restaurants will have an average five-year life span."

After all, the restaurants were likely to fail within a year anyway, so all this hoopla about economic impacts on the service economy is so much hot air. What's the fuss about? The people who die, were going to die anyway, and the industries that are failing, would have failed anyway. It is a wash.

I've long been interested in why people believe the things they believe. We all like to think that we form our beliefs based on disinterested reason. But I have found that's rarely the case.

Giles is the extreme. So perhaps poking his psyche provides some special insight.

Giles is just a troll. The tell is he has been intentionally using the "quote" tags wrong for years (under other names like K5). I don't think you will find any insight except that he likes trolling.

The point to be garnered out of age demographic this disease most affects, is not that older citizens are not valued. It's the GOOD news that we know who is most at risk, thus CAN protect them. If this disease had the same IFR across all demographics as it does the elderly, we'd be in deep sh*t, and we wouldn't have any problems getting people to wear masks and shut down for awhile. But the fact is, this is not the case. So we should take our understanding of this disease, protect the vulnerable, and open up the economy.

You may be right.

But even that in itself is interesting. If he's a troll then he must put in a lot of time and effort. It takes a lot of preparation to dig that deeply into conspiracy land. So if he's just pretending to be a nutter, why spend all that time?

Yes, I am a Christian. I have faith. My faith in Jesus is not based solely on disinterested reason. I'm no different from anyone else in that regard.

Yes, it's kind of amazing. The last three days have been in single digits. That has not happened since March.

The 7-day average for cases is through the roof though. It's an all-time high that is probably not solely due to more testing. Positivity keeps going up as well. 7-day average for that is now just over 9%.

And it's working. The theory that R states would eventually be forced into pushing mask wearing is coming true.

Gov. Abbott's original emergency declaration was amended to expressly prohibit local governments from issuing fines to people who do not wear masks. Most of the big metro areas had emergency orders that required people to wear masks and had fines to enforce. Gov. Abbott expressly overruled them, claiming that it was just about personal responsibility. Flash forward and positive cases are spiking big time all across the state. Amazing that he gets away with this. And he would not let news media from Houston or San Antonio attend his press conference today.

Nope. How can you be so confused. An 80 plus year old with multiple life threatening conditions (and 94% of Covid deaths do) clearly has a quite short life expectancy with or without Covid.

So if Covid does take them out early (and many of these so called Covid related deaths are certainly actually due to their other health issues) they lose a few month, possibly a few years, of low quality life.

Whereas young folks dying lose many decades.
