Fascism starts this way. Undermine credibility of the institutions that provide limits to political power (FBI, Justice system, elections). Spread fear and anger. Tell people the only solution is unchecked power in the hands of one charismatic leader. Make up lies about political foes. Political allies control media sources and repeat lies so often that people cannot tell what is truth anymore. When other media and the slandered call out the lies, accuse them of doing the same thing even worse. No need to deny it now, their side is already living in a world of lies they cannot recognize.
Before the "But they did this even harder" argument, ask yourself if your news source has admitted lies in favor of your political view. Did your news source settle a lawsuit for $780M to stop more of those lies being exposed in court? Or is your news source aligned with that news source? Or are they being sued by the same entity for the same lies? Or is your "news" source an unverifiable post on social media? Or does your "news" come from one person who you believe no matter what?
