Virginia is an interesting case, as, were it not for nova (northern Virginia) where a ton of government workers live, it would probably be a deep red state. When Trump came into office, one of the first things he did was freeze the salaries of government workers (who receive mighty fine benefits, as long as they work full time; many have pensions...). That lost nova for Trump forever.
Then you had Youngkin's upset over Clintonista McAuliffe for the governship in 2022, and it looked like VA might be a red state again. Dems have clawed back some ground, taking both chambers of the legislature. And, it's important to point out that Youngkin had to keep a certain distance from Trump and run on a pretty broadly appealing "I think parents should be informed of school cirriculums" platform. He's probably a dark horse VP pick, and would make a better fit as Trump's Secretary of Education (see also: DeSantis) in a 2nd Trump administration.
