Exactly! Big money tax cheats are very difficult to audit and take lots of resources. But they yield huge results. Not only from fines but as a deterrent. The 10 year 60 billion plan seeks to change that. So as it stands billionaires are left to cheat.
They haven’t paid enough for what they are taking out. The payouts need to be more in line with current life expectancies. That is not gutting, that is good business sense. A leader should make the right decision. Unfortunately, most politicians just care about being popular and are unwilling to make the difficult decisions. SS and Medicare are struggling because everyone is kicking the can down the curb hoping the next guy will do the right thing.

We've clearly decided getting more young workers into the country to support an aging indigenous population with taxes via immigration is not the plan. So we have to either cut benefits or increase taxes, or some combination of that.

This reminds that I'm always surprised that people are surprised that the court would appear not to care about their "reputation." Lifetime appointments, little or no accountability (meaningful ethics code, oversight, IG, etc.). Knowing what we know about human nature, the surprising thing would be if they DID care.
Seems like another "glitch" in so much smart stuff that the founders did. Or, maybe Congress just hasn't shown enough balls to put the court more in line? Not sure, but as it currently stands, it's completely unsurprising that they would do whatever they want - both legally and ethically - and not be too concerned about it.

The majority of money recouped for taxpayers comes in the form of deterrence. If you can get tax billionaires to stop cheating the gains to taxpayers goes on for decades! Way more than millions. All the investment in auditors pays for itself many times over.

american incomes have far outpaced anywhere else. We used to be roughly the same as europe now we're in a different ballpark, far higher. America is a land of plenty, a land of opportunity where if you don't mess yourself up with drugs and debt and you work steadily you'll have a life of luxury undreamed of even a generation or two ago.
sure some things aren't working well - healthcare is crazeballs for ex. We work more than everyone else too.
but the country as a whole is thriving economically by just about every metric and outdistancing our peers mightily.

if you get a second you need to watch this CNN interview with Ted Cruz by Kaitlen Collins. It is valuable for a few reasons.
1. Typically right wingers gaslight and mow over the TV interviewer to get the talking point out and the interviewer gives up after one or two feeble challenges. Collins does not let Cruz BS stand. That is rare.
2. You can clearly see the game that the right wing plays regarding the 2020 election. It is the same game our Trumpers play here. They say the "Democrats say there is no fraud". Well everyone with a brain knows that every election in history to any scale had fraud and irregularities. The findings of all experts is that there was no fraud that could affect the outcome of the election. By continually reframing the argument they make it believable to the rubes. Ted Cruz plays this game over and over. And he excuses the crimes Trump committed to stay in power by reframing their GOP efforts at "just trying to get it right". "simply examining the evidence". Nope. They wanted to shut down the certification with chaos over unfounded and unproven batsh!t right wing Sidney Powell, Rudy and My Pillow guy fraud claims.
3. We also see the truthfulness of the statement: "Ted Cruz. You either hate him or you hate him".
I watched this this morning. Very gross, very pathetic, very insulting to anyone with ANY intelligence. A silly, incredibly transparent game ("Are you saying that there was NO fraud?) that a decent 8th grader should see through. And so many years after the events, still with no substance. But works on roughly half of mericuh.
