Henry, thanks again for sharing with us. Do you mind me asking how things are going with your weight? Seems like the training is going very well.

The great Rod Dixon, of New Zealand, talking about the legend of Henry Rono:
I remember a race in Italy. It was an absolute downpour during the 5,000. Lane one was absolutely flooded, but we persisted to run in it. Henry was in lane three and ran 13.17 and he was 15 seconds ahead of us.
PT: (laughter). You know what, he ran about 5,100 meters
Just wanted to say Hi as I haven't posted much lately, too busy with cross country season! Yesterday, I made the kids take "Henry's medecine" and run hills. Keep up the good work everyone!
more...Rod Dixon on Rono: at meet in New Zealand
Henry was a lap down almost 5,000 meters into the 10,000 meters. He looked back and saw the leaders about to go by him. Suddenly it looked like somebody lit a bloody fire under him. Henry took off and won the race in 27:39.
PT: He made up 400 meters?
RD: He made up 400 meters and went on to run 27:39, which was the season’s best time until about August of that year and this was back in March. Extraordinary.
PH: 27.39. There’s about maybe five Americans that have ever run that fast
Henry:
do you recall these 2 races that Rod Dixon is referring to? He thought you were incredible! He is supposedly training for masters racing/records too, like you for next season. I would pay to see you 2 battle it out over various distances, next summer; even if you are going for a 50-55 year old age group record!
How did you get almost a lap down in the 10k, then suddenly take off like that? That is unheard of, and speaks of your mental toughness? Did you have a stitch or side ache that finally went away?
wow, Mr. Rono; are those 2 stories of Rod Dixon, about you true or is he exagerating? If true it puts us mere mortals to shame. My pr is just a medium workout pace for you! puts things into perspective, doesn't it? To some, my times would be impressive, while to those few of you at your level, it is merely childs play. I look forward to your complete comeback and racing season next year. Hope things stay on track with the health, training and dieting! I will keep reading!
Henry- This is from the book Edmonton 78 the official pictorial record of the XI Commonwealth Games.
In the Edmonton Commonwealth Games he was simply the finest distance runner in the world, a man capable of making half a dozen of the top ranked 5000 metres and 3000 metres steeplechase runners look utterly common as he toyed with their serious pace, running behind them, running even with them and then sprinting ahead at will to earn standing ovations from the more than 40,000 track fans who knew greatness they came across it in spite of very average times.
The times of the Rono gold medals 8:26.5 in the steeplechase and 13:23.04 were nowhere near his world records of 8:05 and 13:08 but when you consider the wind, the slight 2,200 foot altitude of Edmonton and the dry air ,to say nothing of the huge distances between Henry and the silver medal winners they were very special races indeed.
In most respects they were the great foot races of the Edmonton Games, races that left people talking to themselves
and wondering what manner of man this Henry Rono is......
Theres a great picture in the book as well. Hope you enjoy
excerpt. Cheers
To Rono watcher,
No! No! No!!! Rod Dixon and Uk manager(AN)Both wanted me to rabbit for the 5000 meters world record.
The world was my world record then.I agree to do it.At the back of my mind,I knew what to do.
I took off as any rabbit does nowday. I forgot about it in the middle of the race.I ended-up winning and Rod Dixon got mad at me.
I turn around and I told him. Were you serious about breaking my world record? To make the story short.More-over it is an insult to ask me to give away my world record of the 5000 meters.Rod Dixon and His manager from there they never want to talk with me.
They never trust me any-more.I say, it is same as what they have in their minds, about my world records, asked myself while I was in the middle of the race.
This is in 1981 Oslo meet.Do you remember that Rod Dixon?
Henry
your story is interesting about Oslo, in 1981, where you were the 'rabbit who didn't stop'...lol...and won the race...lol...but the 2 stories Dixon is talking about in the previos posts, were in Italy and New Zealand, and complimentary to you.

the world X-C championship is the toughest distance competition in the world; bringing together the top talent from the 1500m thru the marathon. I'm not happy about them eliminating the short course race, starting next year; as the long course is too long. Should be a standard 10k distance.
7 1/2 miles is not very far
To Rono was God,
No it was in Australia when I ran 29:31.98 in the early season.
He needs to check on that one.
I never ran with him in Italy.

Henry, can you give me an update on when your book will be published.
To denali,
"Henry, can you give me an update on when your book will be published."
Which one? There are two books coming out by the end the end of December 2006 "The Olympic Dream" and "The Gifts of Running"
The importants photos from Kenya and Europe are on the way.
Henry
Henry, thanks very much. I look forward to purchasing both books when they are available.
Henry,
How is your training going? I haven't seen an update in a few days. Your daily training updates keep many of us motivated. I hope it is going well for you.

Henry: Who could blame you? Unless Dixon offered big bucks for a certain time at 3000 or 4000 meters...he must have been dreaming... If you led the first 1500 or 2000, and Rod led from there to 4000... why not have a battle to the finish? Did anyone pace you when you set the record?
I hope this story is in your book. It's a beaut.
