There are enough decent guys to keep this race honest. He seriously does have a chance to up-end 'the race within the race'. I'll let you surmise what that race may be.
^This. If you look at Walmsley’s splits from Western States last year, he ran a majority of the flats and downhill at around 6:30 to low 7 minute pace.
Here is the back-drop. He talked big before WS 2016, but then went off-course. He talked big again before WS 2017, blew-up and DNF'd. He finally got it right in 2018 and 2019. So he has learned and is more mature now. However, really, especially without a coach, what are his realistic chances in the road-marathon which is a different type of 'pain-cave' that the article said he wants to go to?
Think of a simple analogy, like a 'hold-your-breath the longest' contest. A noob guy with a big aerobic engine is still going to lose to the guys that have experience practicing holding their breath. Similarly, if Walmsley wants to really get the best out of himself and hit the marathon's 'pain cave', then he should have been practicing running sub-5 min for long duration, to see how long he can sustain it while staying relaxed.
It is pretty late in the game to get much practice at that and keep fresh legs, but he can still get some practice in, including meditation on it. Part of success will be in being able to relax, focus, and eliminate the energy-absorbing distractions, to get into that rhythmic zone. Since he is a noob, he should be keying off comparable runners that have the pacing figured out.

Yes, but this man has a track/xc background, he's not a pure mountain athlete as some ultra runners might be. He's intriguing because his focus on the mountainous trails for the last 5 years has been combined with splashes in the pan on the road via the Half Marathon. The course was short last month at Phoenix, but given a true focus on the road, one could argue he is a legit high 61 low 62 type runner with an enormous volume of strength in his legs/cardiovascular system to complement his leg turnover capabilities still.
It baffles me that so many on this site discredit what he did at Western States and other ultra's as well, yet can still thrown down OTQ times in the HALF MARATHON nonetheless..give credit where credit is due..

I'm not one of those 'discreditors'; rather, I just offered what I think his best chances of getting the best out of himself on that day. McDonald came in ahead of him at the Phoenix Half (with a 2:11:x PR in the full) and Faubel has gone under 2:10. It would be interesting to at least see how long Mr. Walmsley can stay with those guys, rather than see him instead recklessly try to school those guys and blow-up .
