You work in a very un"average" office. Those results are very reasonable for what you described, population of regular, active exercisers. Here in the US, that does not describe the average.

I work for a rental car company and every woman is sub-6 and every guy sub-5

About half of those women can run right around five minutes. And half of the guys can run under 4:30

I'd say the top three or four guy Runners can all do close to 4:10

And the crazy thing is that no one is an active Runner

This is just based on a once-a-year fitness day that the company sponsors. Imagine if anyone actually exercised at any other point during the year. Most Runners don't realize that the average person can pull real fast time. The thing is they just need more recovery than a conditioned Runner

Pretty much the average random guy can run a 4:30 if he has to. He'll just be sore the next day.

Almost no one in the office exercises except for this once-a-year thing. It's amazing to watch totally out of shape guys running 4:20 miles

But they definitely feel at the next day so that's where the seasoned Runner has a big advantage

I'm a stockbroker. And stockbrokers don't usually live the healthiest lifestyles

But we also have a once-a-year fitness day and I would say half the guys can do SUB 5 minutes. And maybe the top 10% sub four 30

And most of these guys don't exercise at all. But you're right everyone really feels it the next day

Just for kicks we wanted to see what's some of the 430 guys could do the very next day. Most of them were about ten seconds slower. Only one guy was able to run faster than next day. He ran a 425

I work at an old, family-owned engineering consultancy firm, and the average age of employees must be over 50. 80% male, nearly all of them have a beergut to go with their grey or receding hair. All drive big company cars and take the lift even for one floor. Most probably couldn't climb one flight of stairs without difficulty. The women are in equivalent bad shape.

Guess what? Just yesterday, a junior temp suggested we all do a mile time trial. Some think she was making fun of us, but how things turned out differently. It just so happened we all had full running gear with us that day, and 100% of us agreed to the race. So after work we drove round the corner to the track, touched our toes to warm up, and had a race!

Winning time, men 3:46, women 4:16

Median time, men 4:08, women 4:54

My time was 4:05. Better than average, but still over 4.

Not bad for a bunch of fat, old business types is it? I put it down to all the time we spend on the golf course.

I was most impressed by 'Big' Ted Watkins who came 6th with 3:55. To cool down (or show off, some said!) he had a go at 100m and clocked 10.1. Was he sore he missed the sub-10 mark!

Another cool thing we do is every once in a while we play some virtuoso piano concertos. And no one has any musical training or ability

I'm an engineer in an engineering firm. I can confirm that though none of us ever played sports, most of us keep sprinting spikes in our desks at all times.

Oh, and both thread starters have excuses for their sub-par performances. OP of this thread says he's recovering from an injury, OP of that thread says he didn't start running until his late 20s since he was too into video games in HS (so what was he doing from ages 18-27?)

I would just like to say that I believe everything everyone has written on this thread

I also believe there is a benevolent dictator like person who lives up in the sky and rules over the heavens and the Earth

And he's very concerned with what we eat on certain days and with what sort of magical chants we recite

And he likes to talk to certain people in cryptic ways and give them self-serving and contradictory messages to report to the rest of us
