Yes, this is nonsense. Nobody who actually watches track and field thinks that the long jump is a good event, let alone the second best. There’s no way to even televise it in an exciting way. It’s far weaker than the comparable high jump or pole vault. Those events at least have obvious tension and an apparent climax leading to success or failure on each run. With long jump, it’s virtually impossible to tell how well someone did while watching.
This “most popular” event list reads like a bunch of non-fans were polled, and they just picked the events that they could most easily conceptualize. 100m is the “world’s fastest man” race: easy to understand, Usain Bolt runs it, ok. Long jump and high jump are next: they’re self-explanatory, and they sound like something you did with your friends as a kid on the playground. Everybody has an idea of what pole vault is, and it seems vaguely dangerous and exciting, so that gets in next. Then it's the 200m and 400m, which are literally just the next shortest events after the 100m, and therefore maybe more exciting or something. Nothing about this list makes me believe that the people who gave these answers know a thing about track and field or ever watch it.

They're only dropping those events for DIAMOND LEAGUE meets, not championships. The individual meets can still host those events, they just won't be part of the TV package.

I know that they are only dropping/replacing the 5k in the DL. It is still a weakening of the status of the track distances. And it will also hit some athletes financially because smaller meetings or non-DL events at DL meetings don't offer the same prize money. I also find it stupid to drop the steeplechase. The men's steeple was a very exciting final (both DL and Doha) and in the women's steeple there are about three times as many white women in the top 10-12 than in the flat 3k/5k, so if the Bowerwomen were running races, it would not be 5 "indistinguishable" Kenyans on top. (If it is true that the African dominance is a silent reason for cutting back the track distance events at DL.)
Dropping the 200m saying it's too congested with the 100m while adding 3000m alongside the 1500m is so dumb. Just keep the 5000m instead of adding 3000m.

For some reason some people think of him as an intelligent human being. He isn't. He was awarded a very poor degree from a very non academic University. He is clearly too easily impressed by slick talking suits who have no understanding of or love for our sport.

Letsrun could start their own professional track league which is independent from the iaaf.
They could have their own rules and testing and it could gain momentum.
Recall when people were confused by the WWF (World Wrestling Federation), and the name was changed to WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), to emphasize the fact that they were promoting an ENTERTAINMENT, not a sports contest. Maybe the IAAF should change their name to IAAE to clarify their new emphasis.
People can’t sit any more for 12 minutes and watch a race??
This is what happens after Farah age. The man with the rest of Salazar’s athletes have ruined the sport with their eternal sit and kick races. Slow times. We miss the days of real 5k runners like Geb, Bekele, Kipchoge, even Motram. Those were the days. But We saw in the WC that things did get faster, after Farah has left. To bad, they cut these events.
Track is not the only sport grappling with format issues. Swimming is trying out a new format. Doesn’t hurt to have a billionaire backer. That said, this will probably end in failure.
