Mr. Derderian-
What do you think happened to the once great GBTC? Why is it that the club has zero national exposure any more? Is it being mismanged or poorly coached? How long were they on the top? Was it just that Billy Rodgers brought in some friends? It seems like once Bill was no longer on top--that the club pretty much disappeared from the public eye.[/quote]
What happened to GBTC in the late 1970s-1980s and was complete in 1983 when Greg won Boston in a Brooks shirt not a GBTC shirt was two things. GBTC formed in 1973 by Jack McDonald to answer a need for a post-collegiate track club in Boston. With Rodgers in the club after 1975 all the top runners wanted to join. There weren't other clubs aspiring to that level. Then with the club hosting the Freedom Trail Race sponsored by LaBatt's Beer the club had lots of money. Any good runner could get an airplane ticket to a major race if he were a member of GBTC so all the more good runners joined. Then shoe companies contracted the very best runners which removing the attraction for other runners to join GBTC and for the sponsorship that supplied the money. So top runners in the Boston area aspired to get shoe contracts instead of GBTC membership. Now the club is a self-supporting organiztion of about 180 people none of whom have running as #1 in their lives but rather #2 or #3 after work/school or family. Our team did win the team prize at Boston with three men in the low 2:30s, two Harvard Grad student and one guy with a full-time job.
The Great GBTC of 1979 answered a temporary and unique need.
