Of course we reference the Maasai...(due to many things) their life expectancy is only 40-50 years usually. That is important though. Keep up a high fat, high protein (animal meat based diet in keto) and most people after 40-50 years are likely going to have higher rates of heart disease/stroke/type II diabetes and/or some sort of cancer. There is a reason people don't stay keto long term (it is more a new fad diet with Paleo/Atkins etc. Of course there are major lifestyle factors that can influence that kind of correlation. What the Maasai have going for them is a lot of physical activity. Now onto the second point: If it is "all about calories" in regards to the obesity epidemic in the US then why promote eating a lot of fat (9 kcal/gram) compared to a lot of carbs (only 4kcal/gram). Of course highly refined things (oils, added refined sugar, refined grains) add caloric density. Actually the oils are bad mainly because they are high fat. Like the food guide always said "use sparingly." Then of course we eat massive serving sizes in all sorts of meals and don't exercise enough. Duh. But realize (like fats) not all carbs are created equal. Basic science shows the human body runs really well on carbs and they are great at fueling the brain. Highly trained E. African marathoners who eat a high carb diet (with a lot of vegetables and ugali etc) are great fat burners because of their high mileage, aerobic training. There have been plenty of populations and individuals throughout history that have thrived on a vegetarian or near vegetarian (plant based, high carb low fat) diet and lived to be 80-90 years and very healthy. Give me a real life example of a population that has been high animal fat/high protein keto and lived for 80-90 years and thrived? I never said a plant based diet is truly best for running....I'm just saying it is at least on par with any "balanced omnivore's " diet. People have the misconception that us vegans/vegetarians can't be healthy for some reason. It's already been shown to be a sustainable and healthy diet!
High protein, high fat, moderate-low carb = great 'health' wrote:

Average american consumes 20% of there calories from grains, and 20% from vegetable oils. But let's blame meat for obesity. Also, here's what a true meat eating population looks like:

Exactly. The American masses of prior generations weren't experiencing the obesity epidemic, and they were consuming meats at the same levels of today.
It IS absolutely about calorie intake, and the carb-loaded current lifestyles are the problem.
