Listen grandpa, there's no complaining about 1/4 ass showing and a 1/2 ass should also be applauded. If you hadn't worked grandma in the dark through a hole in the sheet you'd have seen her ass too.

Let's see the progress through Labor Day or so. If she is and stays healthy, physically and mentally, she'll be fine, and we'll see steady if not rapid progress. As a fan, I'm just encouraged she's running at all. If she's happy, her enthusiasm will carry her back to physical fitness, and the times will follow. Her inherent joy, as much as her aerobic capacity and natural speed, was her original advantage.
Why has no one said she went home devastated?
Her giddiness was because she was on top of the world. Her joy didn’t cause her fitness. It was the other way around.

Maybe not the ideal rust buster after a two-year absence. On the positive side there are less fast food chains in Europe and maybe the plan is to race her way into shape. Don't get discouraged Mary, it's an off year and there are two years to get ready for Tokyo. Stay Calm and Get faster.

This. Well, not necessarily the joy, but just being out there racing is a very good thing. If Cain can take this as a positive and keep moving forward, I think she will improve.
I was never close to world class, but I had a stretch once where I was about 2 minutes slower than PR shape in a 5k (this happened consistently; it wasn't just one race). You won't fully understand this unless you've experienced it. It was for different reasons than Cain, but it's a terrible feeling when you race for the first time and realize that you're not remotely close to what you thought or hoped. In my case, I was able to steadily work my way back, and PR'd after about 2 years.
Cain may not be able to get back to her world class 2013-2014 form. If that's the peak of her career, it's still a remarkable one. But I do think she can get to the level where she can PR in the 5k and 3k (and maybe the 1500), if running is what she wants to do with her next 5-10 years.
Just realize how tough it is to be in her situation. There is such a mental effect where she is now, much more than when she was on top. If Mary Cain enjoys running/racing and thinks it's fun, I predict she will tough it out and have a solid pro career. If not, then I hope she can look back fondly on what was an exceptional rise!
Also, remember how many people were ragging on Clayton Murphy earlier THIS YEAR. I'm not saying that will be Mary Cain's path, but just remember how unnecessarily harsh LetsRun can be.
Mary Cain will be fine. What better way to spend a summer than in europe running and racing. I would like to see her work on the speed first and then move up in distance as the fitness gets better.
I think the mistake Salazar made was moving the distance up and putting too many miles in too quickly.
She should have finished the race. This was a comeback race. She was only fooling herself if she thought she was going to be competitive. No knock on her, but in order to know where you need to go, you need to know where you are. She noor her coach can answer that. What she does in a workout at this point will definately be different than how she finishes in a race. Just finish a race somewhere and make the drawing board from there.
Just watched the video and for the few seconds she was in frame from side profile she looked horrible. Looked like she was shuffling compared to the others. Emily Sisson looked great as usual.
She should talk to John Trautmann for inspiration.

You're right! My Uncle Rick once cramped really bad, but he still finished the race. If only the other runners hadn't been so selfish, they would have carried Mary across the line like that firefighter did with my Uncle Rick. That Facebook post got so many likes!!! Even if you have to walk, it doesn't matter, as long as you finish--it all counts the same! If Mary just paces herself and digs deep, soon she'll be running marathons just like Uncle Rick.

Does anyone know any of the details from her layoff? Could she not run at all, and if not, how long has she been running again? And if she is still under contract wouldn't she be expected to cross-train to maintain her cardio fitness and keep her weight down(assuming that she needs to lose a few lbs)? Attributing her performance to it being a "rust buster" doesn't really make sense.
