Why Do Distance Runners Hate Triathletes?

yeh, why doesn't every anonymous poser post their pr and we can compare it to the track pr's of some triathletes that seem to be visiting. Include year and race. Don't be shy little ones....I don't want cross country crap pr's---those times are as illegitimate as the run courses for triathlons. Ofcourse this will only narrow the debate to 'who is faster on the track' as opposed to who bumps more male ass, or who is a better athlete.

lets see, I've run 15:29 for the 5k last year at the Cardinal Invite, but I'm only a junior and I'm training really hard this summer running 80 miles a week. I was sick when I ran the 15:22, and had to lead the first half of the race, and I had an in-grown hair on my big toe, and my girlfriend had just broke up with me so I was a little depressed, and I ate too much garlic bread the night before at the italian restaruant that my team went to, and I only got 8 hours of sleep, and my spikes weren't sharpened, and I got a cramp during the 6th lap, and my coach was a second off on my 11th lap split so I got mad at that, and I wasn't wearing my lucky blue nike sweat band, and I had a tough week of training where I might have gone a little to hard on the 12 x 200's but I was feeling so fresh, and my coach told me that I should go so hard but I didn't listen....

no one ran a 15.29 at the cardinal. and thats slow by the way.

Ever ran into one on a training run, the will tell you they are a tri"athlete" within the first 30 seconds, what races they are training for, how they did last year.....blahblablah, freeking loosers, so just pick up the pace and drop them.

You guys need to lay off the tri guys. The fact that they can run low 31's for a 10k after swimming and biking is pretty good, especially since 3/4ths of the posters on here can not. There are a lot of slower triathletes just like there are a lot os slower "pretender" runners. That doesn't mean that the top guys aren't some of the best conditioned athletes in the world.

And their clothing is a function of their sport, just like yours, unless you are one of those runners that trains in shorts that go to your ankles. So lay off and stop being jealous.

Yeah, but who are the 31:00 10k tri-athletes he is talking about that are posting HERE? And, remember, he said he was talking about tri-guys that can run a 31:00 legit 10k at the END of a tri (most tri's have run courses that are WAY short ). I doubt any are posting here. Sure, there are guys out there than can do that, but there are ALSO guys (East Africans) that can run in the 26's for a single 10k. But I doubt THEY are posting here either.

So what was that guy's point? People already said that the really TOP national and international tri-ath-a-letes are pretty damn good. We are making fun of the "hard-core" yuppie regional/local tri "stars." AKA....the tri-guys we normally see out and about in our towns and who are posting here.

As a relatively new distance runner, I didn't know we were supposed to hate on Triathletes, I felt kinda out of the loop. But here it goes...

I really have no beef with them,, as far as I'm concerned they're cool people too, even if the smell funny.

I've always wanted to make a bumper sticker to sell to my tri-buddies: "Those who can't run, Tri."

Frankenstein amalgams of multiple existing sports seem to lack seriousness. (Yes, I regard the Olympic biathlon the same way.) How would triathletes regard a tetrathlon which adds a round of H-O-R-S-E between the triathlon's swim and the bike legs? To me, the triathlon is a curiosity... like the beer mile. The winners may have running talent, but until they skip the other activities, you never really know how much.

I honestly think we should have that as an event: The Beer Mile. We should have it at track meets and score it accordingly.

That's fiction, they run low 31's for 9K.

If the outfits are functional for triathlon (swin-bike-run) then why do they wear them in races that involve ONLY running?!?

I don't hate triathletes. I choose not to be a triathlete for very good reasons. What makes me mad is when some tri-geek starts arguing and trying to get me into triathlon when I don't want to do it.

Just a thought that I wonder if anyone else considered how similar triathletes are to marathoners. marathoners in my mind are rejects of other distance events (10k, 5k, etc). Sure you can argue there are a few studs (as you can with triathletes), moreso now than 5 years ago even. But traditionally aren't marathoners guys who are past their track prime? And you have lots of marathoners that develop a sense of "i'm better at longer stuff" or whatever their particular self-assuring attitude is. So 2:20 guys think they're in the same caliber as 28:50 guys since they share the trials qualifying distinction, even tho when they were 10kers they didn't break 30 min's (meanwhile the 28:50 guys can run 2:20 on their sunday long run).

I don't think it's a jealousy issue with us. It's more of dammit we beat these kinds of guys all the time, and then they find something that you want no part of (like a tri or a marathon) so they can say they're better at something you don't even care about.

Basically, both runners and triathletes are sub-par athletes. They are both what you choose to do when you cant excel at any real sport that requires coordination and cognitive thought process.

"Ok, I cant run fast, so that eliminates football, I dont have hand-eye coordination so that eliminates baseball, tennis and golf, I cant jump so that eliminates basketball. Well, I can run. Let me try sprints. Shit I am not fast at all and I am definately not explosive so I am not going to try the hurdles. Let me just go over there with the other members of the Beta-Club and go romp through the woods for 30 minutes. I get a shirt too!!! Wow. Now I can tell everyone I am an "athlete".

Ok I agree with your point that getting $1 off at subway doesn't constitute sponsorship and that there are butt monkeys around who claim this to be sponsorship.

The whole concept of wholesale deals be it from a retailer or a regional/national distributor is that you purchase "at cost". i.e. at the same price the goods were purchased by the retailer/distributor. THEY MAKE ZERO RETURN FROM THIS. THEY DON'T MAKE MONEY at all. The idea is that the "sponsor" doesn't lose any money but the "sponsored" athlete doesn't pay any margin - the most optimal position for both parties.

This is most definitly a form of sponsorship. If you've ever been sponsored you would know that in most cases a company will not offer you cash straight off the bat. Initial sponsorship deals are "at cost" deals or similar, sponsorship is a matter of loyalty - you have to prove you are a worthy investment.
