My friend, a marathon runner who never missed a day, in the 1980s had a wife, a complete non-athletic slug, who couldn't understand either the allure of running OR the health aspect of his running. She mockingly said, "You look like an Ethiopian!" in front of the daughters, one of whom grew up to be a...MARATHONER!
Needless to say, the marriage failed. The ex-wife went on to marry another slug, who later had open-heart surgery, while my friend is still healthy and active in his mid-60s. And he still "looks like an Ethiopian."
The night before an out of town marathon, we visited a friend of my husband, who lived near the race. He did the usual, "Marathons are so unhealthy for you!" and "Running is the worst form of exercise" and "A woman can only run one marathon in her lifetime; otherwise the damage to her reproductive organs is too great" stuff.
Husband: "Oh, I don't think so, she's run like ten marathons."
Friend: "Yeah, you've run ten marathons, but how many have you won?"
^^^^Hate so much. Truthfully, I'd won the last marathon I raced, and placed third the next morning. I still can't stand that little twerp, and I totally hold the greasy Dominos pizza he served us responsible for my very interesting burps at mile 22 the next day.

I dont think this one is all that bad to be honest. Running can be used for contemplation which beyond the reduction in latent anxieties built up while an individual is in labor mode allows for the high points of knowledge in one's life. In that sense running is a gateway for some and not always a competitive measure.
tldr; I think that is a fair question for deep thinkers. A sound body allows for a sound mind and a sound mind allows for a sound body.

Dang, I was just about to post that one. Quite a few people say this...... I usually respond with something like, " actually, you do drive that far. You probably drive way more miles per week than I run. Add it up."
