Who could run 12 sub 50 second 400's in 12 hours?

Nick Willis could run 12 sub 50 second 400's in 12 hours.

any elite sprinter....46 is literally jogging for them, 49 high they could do 25 times in 12 hours

Then why hasn't anyone ever come close to this if it is so easy?

Let me give you a clue:

it requires the best 800m runner in the world to run 12x400@half a second faster than 800m WR pace.

It requires basically 3 miles of work at, say, 700m WR pace (Rudisha ran 1:14.30 for 600m before finishing in 1:40.91 in his last 800m WR).

I told you the first time you asked why no one has come close to doing it...

because it would be a stupid workout, and what is the point? There are countless random physical challenges that are humanly possible that no one bothers to do.

Even Webb in 2007 wouldn’t have been able to do this. If Webb in his prime couldn’t, then Centrowitz, who didn’t have the raw speed that Webb did could not do it either.

Rudisha, Coe, and Kipketer would have been the only ones to come close. Ovett is another possibility.

In a Flotrack video I remember Duane Solomon saying one of the workouts he does is 3x3x400 in 51 with 200m jog between reps, 400 jog in between sets. You gotta think when he was in that kind of shape he could do 12x 49.9's with more rest and could crank it out in an hour or two.

Today? Someone like Korir or Rudisha could do it easily, or even Kerley. God only knows what a 49 second 400 feels like to a 43 guy. I wouldn't count on any of the milers to be able to do it, that's way too close to their top end speed.

To the discussion of Lagat, obviously it matters if you mean today's Lagat, who probably can't even break 4 in the mile, or prime Lagat, who was much faster than any US miler in history.

No one has done it because its a stupid workout that's not going to help you run faster.

The obvious choice is a very fast 800m runner, but I would think more a 400/800 guy rather than an 800/1500 guy.

For the 800/1500 guys the only person I'd go with would be Coe, due to his 400 speed.

For the 400/800 guys, there are two. Rudisha, and the guy that I would have thought the most obvious, and unless I missed something, nobody has mentioned.

The elite 400 guys have responded that they could do it. I believe them. I watched a HS soph last year run a PR 48.2, split a 48 med, and split 48 in the 4x4 all in 2 hours. Think how easy it would be for a 44 guy to run a bunch in 49 with 5 minutes rest. He could expand to 10 minutes if it gets tough. I would probably have him do 8 and then decide if he should finish or come back in 10 hours for the last 4.

Would a fast 400 runner please complete this workout with a beer before each rep, with video. That will settle things in a very entertaining way.
