You are right there I think. He is extremely gifted! When he ran sub 46 sec at 400m he had the theoretical capacity to break 1.40 at 800.

You cannot attribute causality to something not shown to exist. You can create a reasonable hypothesis and then try to validate it. I keep repeating it because people keep making the same unsupported statements and trying to pass them off as fact. What you say is reasonable but speculative. Do you have any kind of factual support for your argent?

Genes exist. They really do. You just have to match physical traits to the corresponding gene(s).

You're not going to find something that doesn't have genes backing it up.

It's just not important enough to identify genes related to physical ability.

Identifying genes responsible for physical disabilities is far more important. That can actually be done. Imagine that.

Yes, if you're going to attribute a specific phenomenon to genes you need to "make" them "like gravity." Otherwise you're speculating. That's how the scientific method works.

2:20 would not make you a professional or an elite, but I get what you are saying otherwise. The OP is a tool.

What's stopping me is that at my age (43) the amount of rigorous training I'd need to be truly elite would leave me little time for not only coaching track but also soccer, which I love dearly. And I love playing soccer and basketball. I've had a whole slew of injuries as well, from several of sports I'm involved in, and that factors in greatly. People say I'm "very young for my age" and that's nice, it's also true because I'm so involved in sports, but I do have to examine the toll it takes on my body.

While it's a bit of a myopic question, the OP's original question nonetheless is interesting. In my case, I made a choice: my life revolves around sports and I very much pride myself on my athleticism, but I decided to pursue several things instead of one singular goal. To be a competitive elite I'd have had to do the latter.

many folks seem to think genes only dictate something like VO2max or leg speed... is it not possible that genes also dictate the ability to commit to something and dedicate one's self to something... is it not possible that genes also dictate the ability to stay injury free?

So, yes. genes dictate one's ability to be elite... but what genes and more importantly what combination of those genes... and perhaps there are several combinations. Chew on that. Cheers

Exactly. That is my problem. I have all the physical attributes but my Mom says becoming elite would attract all kinds of evil women and men who don't have my best interests in mind. Mom has a sharp eye. When she sees me leave the basement with my sports bag she takes it away from me. OK gotta go back to playing World of Warcraft now.

Gravity

We are living in a free world, so for some people it is legit to make money with running.

I have great sympathy for the times, when it used to be considered normal that just a limited amount of time should be invested in sports. There is more to life.

It is way more impressive that Bruce Tulloh ran a 13:12 for three miles on just 28 miles a week while working full-time.
