Good for her, but problems with her professor implies she messed up somehow. A degree, especially a PHD, is your responsibility. You have to make it happen. No one is going to be holding your hand. She messed up, but good for her that she is moving on. It may take awhile for the PHD to pay off, mine did, but it will in the end.

I have a bachelor's degree, spend 6 weeks abroad per year, and will be worth close to a million dollars by the time I'm 40. I'm one of the few people who can think outside the box and learn on my own though. In the end, people care about results, not necessarily formal degrees. All my best friends are PhDs and have urged me to get one so "people will know how smart I am." The fact I'm vastly more successful than any of my PhD friends should be indication enough that I'm smarter than them. Derrr.

I "wasted away my life" getting a masters and a Ph.D. Now I make well into 7 figures, work out of my home office, make my own hours, go for a run out the door to some nice trails a mile from my house, and I have no regrets about my life path. There was a time around when I was finishing my Ph.D. (I was 33) when I didn't know where life would lead. Not all Ph.Ds lead to professorships but it turns out critical thinking, statistical analysis, and domain knowledge apply to every industry out there.

Good for you, but the average PhD holder makes nowhere near 7 figures, and the best of the best in society typically never went to graduate school at all. Also, this thread was about my idiot friend, not your outlandish anecdote.

Every situation is different but in visiting college towns, I always see quite a number of late 20s types working at the college bookstore or the food co-op or working the cash register at the cafeteria, you know are still half-ass working on a grad degree (they're eager to tell you) that you know they'll never get or use if they do. They just can't get out of the student life bubble and grow up.
Eugene, Oregon is a prime example. Eventually, they may "graduate" by moving to Portland to continue life in a PC manner.
My best friend is a complete loser, too.
On the other hand, I was poor and still getting my PhD at 40, but I've saved over $100,000/year in the 10 years since, doing work that I love -- so no regrets.

There are very, very few people who have an income of $1m+.

i would literally need to see a tax return to believe anyone here makes that kind of cash. According to the IRS, 235k people made more than 1M in income. Out of 321M people in the US. Yet 2 people in this thread alone have claimed it.

I'm not sure you know what "opportunity cost" means.
If she winds up with a lucrative career with this path, the opportunity cost of not pursuing this latest PhD would be the missed higher earnings.
She also may get a rich husband this way.
Opportunity cost means the income you would miss by not making a certain choice.
Now, she chose not pursue something right now it seems, so her opportunity cost of not doing that means a late start in work experience.
