He is fast enough compared to most of his peers in the NFL but he doesn't have the blazing speed of the very fastest players. Imagine if he was as fast as his grandfather (who was probably faster than anyone currently in the NFL). But his quickness and agility is probably on par with anyone in the league.

Average times by position from NFL combine. CM's 4.48 is plenty fast, he just can't run away from players in the open field like he did in college.

Wide receiver 4.55

Cornerback 4.55

Running back 4.59

Safety 4.62

Christian was a 10.75 100m guy in high school & 22.17 200m guy.

The answer: not worth a damn. The except is a mild predictive quality in the 40 for running backs.

I live in the Bay Area. I've seen the kid play for years, on TV, in person. He has decent speed. "Football fast" is kind of a meaningless term. He has great agility, change of direction, etc., everything I've already said.

Football fast generally implies speed w/ pads on. Put pads on a 210lb guy who runs a 4.4 @ the combine vs. a 185lb 4.4 combine runner and the heavier athlete will probably be faster on the field. The pads are a smaller % of the overall weight they're carrying + just the slightly additional strength advantage they have to move their limbs with extra tight compression pants.

I was a WR/DB in high school and it's a heck of a lot different running in helmet, pads and cleats on turf vs. any sort of track. Add to it that when you're actually playing, there are very few times you're just focused on 'running fast'. The overwhelming majority of the time you're making reads and decisions, etc. that inherently cause your body to NOT go as fast as possible because you're thinking and using a slight degree of hesitation to keep options open. Guys with 'football' speed also tend to have a lot of natural 'football iq' that allow them to process information faster and thus make more assertive movement changes. One of the scouting expressions for this is "gear down"....as in, the athlete doesn't exhibit much gear down when making cuts in space.
