Seeing some of these posts makes me wish I would've looked a little harder elsewhere. And trained harder in high school. Freshman year times are very comparable with many of the D2 guys who got almost full rides.

I don't know if these answers are surprising you, but they are not surprising me. In every sports except football and basketball, there is virtually no money for male athletes. Fastest guy on our small high school team had some 'maybe' money dangled for a D2 school, but in the end got nothing and went D3 with partial academic scholarships. Don't know any others runners who had money offered at all. Another friend was good enough to be drafted in a late round in baseball, and he had college offers that were a tiny fraction of a scholarship. He ended up going to the U.S. Naval Academy, so it was irrelevant, but still.
I'm VERY surprised at how little money there is in track scholarships. I'm an old hobbyjogger so wasn't in this world when I was in HS / college but, yeah, I had no idea you guys toiled on your own dime. Props.
Club, at a school with a shitty ACC program where the coach won't let me walk on.

Let's see.
Graduated high school 7th out of 190 (without really trying, high school is a breeze) with 3.93 gpa unweighted and about 1150-1200 SAT (back in early 1990's version).

Went to JC and got about 40% paid first year, then went up to about 65% second year. Didn't run all that much faster but made nationals team as #4-6 guy. Graduated with about 3.67, transferred to average D1 school and got nothing. I came in and ran #2-3 for them in cross and coach acted like they were doing me a favor, so I stepped off team and ended up running faster than all of the team save one on my own before graduating!
might even be older - the safe spaces stuff is real, and frankly promoted by the faculty and staff at numerous entities. It is part and parcel of the progressive echo chamber.
I wouldn't care one way or the other except that i actually believe it harms students. The point of college is learn how to endure discomfort and ego damage and get better.
I send my two daughters to the Ivy League. Both great students and national merit finalists. And yes, I paid for every penny (no aid given my income level) and gave them resources, cars, spending money, clothes, etc, so they could focus on school. And yes, the karma behind it all is wonderful - because when I was 18 going to school with a duffle bag full of clothes and nothing else I never would have guessed I could have done such a thing.
Which does bring me to a point. I did not enjoy being on a track scholarship and longed just to be a regular and serious student. But I have a lot to thank track and field for - that's for sure.

I decided against a lot of solid midwest D2 schools and some low tier D1 schools I had small offers for to take a big scholarship to an NAIA school that had just started a cross country and track program. I graduated last May and had a solid career (could of been better if I didn't party, eat like shit and stay up late too often...). Ran 15:14 indoor 5k pr.
Proud to say my school is starting to really develop talent and get better recruits. Have guys going to NAIA indoor nationals for 5k, mile, DMR and 4x800M for distance.
