The best ultra runners in the world have persevered to get big wins or continue fighting to finish respectably. When something goes wrong for Jim deep into a race, he completely throws in the towel and doesn't continue to fight. He had only 7 miles to go last year, yet he supposedly sat on the curb after a wrong turn and wallowed in pity.

That's totally wrong. You don't burn out running miles.
Levins problem was that he stopped running the high mileage.
Some on Strava give kudos for hard training, but no kudos if you race well. It's total BS.
The guys with the most training mileage and most heat miles fared the worst at Western States.
I'm not impressed with training warriors anymore. Races are where it counts.

I have to say that I have become absolutely fascinated with with trail running. The documentaries are amazing on YouTube. It's like a whole new world of running.

Like Western States? Looked like a time trial to me as he was racing the 14 hour clock. He surely wasn't racing any of the other runners. The only difference between Western and All the other races he has run is that he wasn't able to finish.

Yeah, because no one else wanted to take him on in his over hyped redemption race, another time trial as you point out. Now that they see he's vulnerable under pressure and competition you got guys like Kilian and Zach Miller signing up for UTMB. Won't be surprised to see Jim pull out. He's weak.

Watch how little kids run the 5ks we are all running on the 4th of July. They take off at Age Group World Record speed for a 5k, then burn up before the end. Jimmy is doing the same thing but Twitter is littered with praise for trying to set the WS record. Blowing up at 60 miles into a 100 mile isn't courageous, it is just plain stupid.
"before the end"? those kids are dead by the 1/2 mile mark, tops; most sooner.

Noone running like Walmsley did in that YouTube video of him showing off flying downhill past hobby joggers at 5min pace is "the bomb".
