When I was a freshman in HS, my teammates and I watched our varsity get absolutely smoked by the #1 team in the country in a dual meet (there were "mythical" national champions back then). We saw cross-country at an elite level and it was a thing of beauty, man. Watching that team made so much of an impression on us that forty years later, our team still runs in a tight pack despite being spread out all over the country.
Not sure it is possible but maybe take your girls to state to watch the meet if they don't qualify as a team, especially the underclass girls. Pick out one of the best teams and have your girls watch how they pack things up. Try to turn it into a teaching moment. Maybe a light will go off in some of your girl's heads. If your girls are too cliquey, maybe do some team-building things in the future with activities that don't involve running. On some level, your girls need to care about each other and not be running their races just to get in some good cardio.
