The rule is the reaching the vertical plane of the nearer edge of the finish line.
Rule 164.2: the athletes shall be placed in the order in which any part of their bodies (i.e. torso, as distinguished from the head, neck, arms, legs, hands or feet) reaches the vertical plane of the nearer edge of the finish line as defined above (as "the finish of a race shall be denoted by a white line 50mm wide")
I think they should ban diving. Include in the rules that the runner still has to be on thier feet when crossing the finish.

Well that pretty much sums it up, you can dive. Well I'll be...I bet most of us here were told the opposite by some old bureaucratic official at some small meet in the past and just assumed that he knew the rules but was in fact full of ....

Actually the end of the men's long jump and the men's single sculls (rowing) probably had more contentious finishes then this race. Some of the throwing events have been mis-measured too. I'm surprised less has been made of them.

Kids dive all the time. I never heard anyone saying it wasn't allowed.

The same reason why MLB players don't dive into 1st; they run through it. It's faster. Also, I'm sure diving onto the track probably HURTS.
MLB players don't dive into first because they are getting paid millions and it's not worth the injury risk. A well executed dive is even more effective in baseball because it's the hands that count not the chest.
I do recall an American dived back in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Don't see whats the big deal... Stop your belly aching.

No, even in youth leagues we teach players to run thru first base, instead of diving. It's slower to gather yourself to dive than to keep driving with your legs.
I understand diving is legal, no problem with that.....what is the rule about going out of your lane when diving? Do you have to stay in your lane or just not impede another runner? She did go into lane 6....
..."everyone should dive", well there is the parallel to the Fosbury flop controversy of the 70's. I think the dive stays.

The rule is you can't impede another runner, and you can't cut the run short. After the turn she could have ran into lane 1 if she didn't impede another runner.
I can't believe I'm agreeing with someone that said caq sucas.
People on here who are implying that she dove as a strategy are being dumb. She was basically over her skis and in a last ditch effort to keep her momentum moving forward, she dove forward. It was a split second, last ditch effort to keep moving forward and it worked.
I'm not mad bro, and it's not a guy/girl thing, I'm asking a question....A runner from Jamiaca got DQ'ed earlier in the evening for going out of her lane in the 400 hurdles....Thus the question, if you get DQ'ed for stepping out of your lane (and she did not impede another runner, she was well back) do you also get DQ'ed for diving and being out of your lane in a lane race?

And many people celebrated Christian Smith's Olimpic 800m qualification in 2008 against Khadevis Robinson. Diving at the line for the 3rd spot.
