In 76 there was Viren, Dixon Quax and the other guy Hildebrand... Pre probably would have finished 5th in 76; + Foster and Stewart, the field was much stronger than 72.

This quote was made up by companies wishing to make a buck.
Pre never said anything corny like this. This was made up after the movie to help promote it.
Was it DUI or DWI back in 1975?
I'm so sick of this self-centered piece of sh!t drunk driver.
LOSER!
He ran most of his career in Adidas shoes.
Some of you guys are going to quibble, but there probably isn't a more authoritative source than the biography "Pre" by Tom Jordan.
In the Rodale second edition (1997), Chapter 12 (page 159) begins with the quotation, followed by the text, "When Pre would speak as he often did to young athletes at clinics and camps, he would end his talk with this sentence."
Some of you are too young to know of a time when not every single person carried a miniature video and sound recording device in their pocket or purse. I'm certain that Tom Jordan had a number of quite reliable sources on this quotation; he's lived in Eugene for over 30 years and has known all the players.
well, if he's been there since 1987 surely he would know first hand.
Just wondering, what you have done with your life? Anything as amazing as he did in such a short time on Earth? No? I didn't think so. Sucks looking back on what little you have done, probably over a longer life span than he, and you have nothing to show for it. But keep bashing a dead man, I am sure you wife and kids (if you have any) would be so proud of you!!

I like your style, man. I followed your lead and discovered that no video exists of Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address.
I dug deeper, turns out there is no video of Moses saying "let my people go!"
We can add Pre's quote to this long list of quotes that do not exist on YouTube, and thus, never actually happened.
Go work, Gumshoe.

Genius thinking. Because there are no videos of two events that took place prior to the existence of videos; this means that the lack of video evidence from an era in which there were videos-- proves that it did happen.
Congrats.

Sounds like we should blame the terrorists and not Bowerman.
yes. We should blame the terrorists for attacking Palestine in 1967 and stealing their land and homes. Wave two after the initial theft of 1947.
I'm sure someone out there has video of this on their iPhone.

Drink driver at the end of the day.
Yep.
Pre, if the story is true, was one of the very few people who ever drove drunk in the 1970s.

So with this sarcasm you have implied am I to assume that Moses never parted the Red Sea?
True. Back in those days the women were locked up during that time of the month

We all know this is Steve Prefontaine's most quoted line. So, out of curiosity, I started digging around to see if there was a video of him saying it. There doesn't seem to be anything out there. I read somewhere that he used to close speeches at youth camps with it, but there's no evidence of that readily available. I've never seen him quoted in an old newspaper article or anything, either.
This made me wonder - did anyone ever personally hear him say this? Am I missing some key piece of evidence? And how accurate is this continuously reused quote?
Pre also said, "A lot of people run to see who's the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts." I wonder when he said it? Before or after Viren handed his azz to him, and he went home devastated with no medal.
Yep, he told Jim McKay of ABC shortly before the Munich 5000 that "if it comes down to a guts race, I'm the only one that can win".
Amazing and ridiculous bravado.

Blame Bowerman.
He wanted to turn Pre into a sit and kick runner.
Built the whole 72 strategy on waiting, but with the terrorists, it delayed the race for a couple of days.
Viren had extra rest (not to mention blood doping), and Bowerman keeps Pre back in the pack.
Sour grapes.
There was never real proof that Viren blood doped. And speaking of rest, Viren had already run two 10000 meter races prior to the 5000. Pre was much more rested.
Viren would have left Pre in the dust no matter the tactics in that race.
I've read through all the comments here and it affirms for me that the "gift" we are talking about is the gift of life. Running is a way that we can filter good from bad. Running is as binary as it gets either a 1 or a 0. Whether Pre said this or NIKE promoted it. The thought is valid. Don't waste your gift, Use it. Whatever the gift , use it to make yourself the best.

Did he ever give any thought about moving up to the 10k?
I remember seeing a time for him that was well below 28, which would have definitely been competitive back then.
Coos Bay, Oregon where he was from. On highway 101 that passes through the city, you will see this massive mural on a building... I think this is what you are looking for.

Most historians agree that Moses is a completely fictional character.
I doubt Prefontaine actually said this. Who goes around saying stuff like this in real life. He might have alluded to the sentiment in some regard. But I think most people agree that you kind of have to say at some level to try your best. I mean not many successful people go around saying just half-ass everything

This has nothing to do with Nike.
There was no Nike until after Pre's death.
"Is sacrifice really the best word here? Doesn't that mean you get something good if you give up your gift."
To sacrifice is to give up something WITHOUT getting anything in return.
Wrong. Get a dictionary dude
