Yeah the first time I read it as "I can't afford a private school education."

So, anyways...
Anyone want to make their picks for individuals for conference? We've seen plenty team picks at this point.
What about favorites to make it out of our region this year? Team/individuals?
1. Coffey - St. Olaf
2. Knobbe - Gustavus
3. Jovan Newsum - St. Mary's
4. Evan Jones - Gustavus
5. Ephraim Bird - St. Thomas
6 Ketola - St. Olaf
7. Timm- St. Olaf
8. Maxwell Kuzara - St. John's
9. Carston Damman - Gustavus
10. St. Olaf Freshman (Hear they are getting a new a solid Lake Conference Miler around 4:15).
11. Bugler - St. John's
12. Salan - Augsburg
13. Hinwood - Macalaster
14. Bjork - St. Olaf
15. Eggers - St. Olaf
Teams to make it out of the region and in to nationals
St. Olaf
Gustavus (More than likely)
I don't think our region will get more than 4 this year
Olaf
Central
Loras
Gustavus/Wartburg
Individuals
Knobbe - Gustavus
Newsum - St. Mary's
Bird - St. Thomas (has to stay healthy)
A bit pessimistic, but I don't think the MIAC will fair off too well this year in the region.
He had a sports hernia that needs surgery but doesn't want to get surgery because of his religion
Ryan Peterson didn't even run xc last year he was a senior in 2014
Aww man I had a hernia my sophomore year. It is hard to come back from because you're constantly afraid it will reoccur. It takes about 3 months b4 you can run and about 3 more before you can run hard and without fear. Get the surgery when its small and listen to everything the doctor says and you'll be back in action in about 6 months. Don't get the surgery and it gets worse (I.e you need mesh) and you might not be running in college anymore

Last I heard in early June was he is refusing to get the surgery and is trying to let it heal on its own and is only able to run sporadically.

You think Bugler will be 11th and beat by his teammate Maxwell Kuzara? Kuzara had a good track season but I don't think he will be cracking the top 10 let alone beating his own teammate.
Is Olaf getting Hamza Ali? I know he was looking there earlier in the year.
Hernias don't ever heal on their own. Period. They require surgery every time in order to fix. If it's preventing him from running now, it won't get any better with time. He will never be a runner again until he gets the surgery. It's a real bummer but that's how it is. Hernias are the devil.
I'd honestly say Bugler is the clear favorite here.
I wasn't saying that Bugler should be where that ranking had him at all. I think it should closer to Coffey, Timm and Bugler as the top three but not necessarily in that order because of their 5k times and I think that they are some of the strongest runners in the MIAC hands down.

You get a hernia that young by a lack of self care. Hernias for for old men, not young athletes.
Was one of the posts deleted? Who has a hernia?

Jovan from St. Mary's is a pretty fantastic XC runner when he is on. He has had a few inconsistencies, but I think he could be thrown in that mix. Also has the same PR as Timm in the 5k and has a faster 8k lifetime best (although that has very little meaning). I want to throw Thomas Knobbe in there, too. He has a winning history of beating Coffey, Bugler, and Timm in XC (just not at regions), and, despite not running it this past season, is definitely the best 10k runner (3rd at MIAC 2015). So it isn't as easy as just Coffey, Timm, and Bugler. That is too classic of an Olaf thing to say...Timm.
Ephraim Bird from Saint Thomas

Let's forget about Evan Jones, either. He is the tope returner from last year and beat both Coffey and Bugler at conference. Hard to tell how strong he will be without having seen his track season as he was abroad. But without any knowledge of him being injured, he would be one of my favorites to place top 3.

Hands down the best three? No way. Maybe on his own team is Paul Timm top 3. And with that new freshman miler, maybe top 4.
I don’t think that Paul Timm’s name should ever really come before Keith Ketola’s. I think people are so quick to forget how good Keith actually is because of his lack of a track season this year due to injuries. Keith’s track credentials from just his freshman year are just as good as Paul Timm’s through 1500m despite spotting him a full year. And his 3k and 5k PR’s are only just off, and that can literally be attributed to his missing of indoor and most of outdoor. If you only base it off of track PR's, Jovan is better than PT. Track aside, Keith has consistently beaten Timm in just about every race on the grass with the exception of like 3 races (granted, one of those was conference their freshman year). That aside, 3 races is it! People are just in love with his 5k PR because of its standing versus the rest of our (mediocre) conference 5k standings. But let us not forget that he had 1 good 5k last year…his PR. Which I might add that he was literally dragged around the track during because there were so many fast people around for him to run with. That isolated incident aside, he is a 15:00 guy. Which is good, don’t get me wrong, but not nearly the level that Coffey is.
I also really don’t like the idea of grouping Paul Timm with Coffey or Bugler. He just is not in the same category at all. Paul Timm came in to college being a decent XC runner and has very gradually gotten better from his freshman to sophomore year. Coffey and Bugler were just, frankly, awful at cross their first two years. But their ability on the grass is rapidly improving. While they were closeish to Paul Timm last year, I think we’ll see them improve drastically to match their track performances.
In reality, he is a solid runner who will score you some points at conference. But that is about it. He probably won’t reach that elite level that some (including himself) try so hard to think that he is. He may become a low-end cross country All-American one day, and he may qualify for nationals in the 5k his senior season, but nothing will come of it. He more than likely won’t even be the best runner on his team in cross country, unfortunately. I don’t mean to bag on the guy too much, it’s just that people are putting him on some sort of pedestal that he is no where near.

Well, that is a harsh way of putting it...
But I agree. Has two okay races and people want to call him a top tier MIAC runner. He is close, but not there just yet. Senior year will be his time.
I disagree with what you said at the end. I think he could win a MIAC championship in the steeple if he continues to get better. Unfortunately, there are some other underclassmen who are getting to be very good, as well. If he doesn't get beat by the new up-and-coming runners in Austin O'Hare from Saint Mary's and Matthew Burgstahler from Saint John's, and if he can get past his history of burning out in the outdoor track season, then he can come away with at least one MIAC championship.
Since we're flaming individual athletes can someone do Knobbe?
