Thank goodness someone pointed out a same-day PB. I was surprised to see so many "in the same week" qualifiers. It seemed like in HS a PB day usually yielded a pair of PBs in both the 1600 and the 3200 because it meant some other shmuck on the other team was either a little faster than you and you got towed to a new best, or he was right on your heels the whole race and pushed you to a new record (or for me... getting dusted in the straight in the 1600 and still being pissed 90 minutes later to kicker earlier on the guy in the longer race).
FWIW - My assumption would be that a guy who is putting it on the line to get under 5:00 should set a goal of around 10:40 for the 3200. When I was helping coach some college women, the ladies who were right about 5:00 for the mile were always shooting for sub 10 for the 3k, so that upholds the theory as well.
I'm assuming the OP is a high school kid, and my advice would be: "Don't worry too much about time!" Just get out there and just race baby! Some of the best runners I've had the please knowing as teammates and friends, didn't give a flying fvck about time in most races - they only cared about making sure as many people were behind them as possible when they crossed the line!
Good luck to all those 5-minute-mile-warriors! Train hard and have fun!
