The entire basis for Vernon's comment was race. It may have been funny to him. It (understandably) was not funny to Farah.

the entire basis of vernon's comment was race? nah - as many have pointed out, farah barely trains or races in the UK. he could - he just chooses not to.

A guy like Willis - you can't really be a pro track athlete and commute from NZ - it doesn't work. But it certainly can be done in the UK.

Lagat moved to the US, he trains here, he races here, he is very active in the US running community - It seems all Mo does is show up in the UK for a race or two.

I think race is an element, but not the 'entire basis' as you say

To compare Lagat to Mo: Lagat would have to change his permanent address to a non-US country, move out of the US, continue to run as a US runner, and wear a US kit for photo ops.

I thought a tax exile was someone who moves their permanent place of residence abroad to avoid tax (whilst often contriving to actually still spend most of their time in the home country). If Mo wanted to be a tax exile, he'd be living in Monaco and paying far less tax. His situation is no different to the thousands of Brit ex pats working in the States. He's resident in Portland because that's where he has agreed with his employer is the best base to peruse his occupation.

FWIW he was not brought up in Somalia. He was born there but then lived for a few years in Somaliland, which, although not recognised by the UN has all the features of an independent state (including it's own currency). He lived the majority of his time in Africa, however in Djibouti (his Grandmother is from there).

Trust me, I live and work in the area of London where Mo grew up. That is not a fake accent. He is a Londoner through and through.

If he had been born in Australia or Canada or Italy but lived in the UK from the age of 8, this question of his nationality would simply never arise.

Plus anyone who has been to London knows Mo fits right in.

This entire debate is ridiculous… so apparently some of you aren't going to consider Farah British because he rarely spends time in England (anymore)? Again, where did he train primarily before joining the NOP?

So Willis is ok to live outside of NZ because it's not convenient for racing? What about Levins? Can't he just train in Canada? What about the other examples another poster provided?

Lagat fits the narrative, but to think this has nothing to do with race is BS.
