It's very interesting to see the evolution of recreational running over the years. How it went from a sport to an activity in and of itself is amazing. I think we're at another apex of a running boom right now. Eventually, pack times are going to get faster as people lose interest in the sport and it grows less fashionable/trendy. Hopefully the glossy magazines will follow suit.
I don't want to start a sh!t storm, but wasn't there an issue with RW and Brooks doing some 'quid pro quo'? RW gave the Vantage and Vantage Supreme very high marks and Brooks purchased prime ad space? Nike wouldn't play. Didn't this come out years later? My very first RW purchased was with Henry Rono on the cover, good memories.

On the 1988 cover of Margaret Groos it looks like she's running barefoot.
I started running in 1976 and I used to look forward to the annual shoe issue. Then Nike screwed it up. I think they quit advertising in RW when their shoes weren't ranked high enough to suit them.

As others have said, thanks for taking the time to post. Takes me back - especially to see the eventual merging of The Runner. I have all of '79 and '80, but your collection is incredible.

These are wonderful to look through - many thanks. I would also love to see covers of The Runner magazine, which merged with Runner's World in the late 80s. I always thought The Runner had better photography.

I've added Distance Running News / Runner's World for January and March 1969. The March 1969 issue has Cheryl Bridges now Cheryl Treworgy who is Shalane Flanagan's mother. She was a world class runner in her own right. If you are interested in having a copy of the article on Cheryl Bridges just send me an email and I'll send you a PDF of the article.
