QOD Grant Fishers coach is arrogant and full of himself

considering that scannell has a family, full time job, and probably (moreso that many of the trolls on this thread) a life, I seriously doubt he gives two poops about the $ he receives from coaching. full disclosure: I have zero idea what he charges, but can't imagine it's more than a pittance, when all the time is truly calculated.

Exactly. It's called under-promising (managing expectations) and then over-delivering. I can't think of a reason to operate any other way in any aspect of life.You always have to remember, there are millions and millions of completely illogical idiots out there that have never achieved anything. He does not do this to make money, he does it because he loves to see success, coach disciplined athletes, and make a difference. He will give free advice to anyone and money does not matter AT ALL to him.

If for some reason the kid doesn't pan out (I'm hoping he does), there will always be the regret of not being one of the very, very select group who broke 4 in high school.

I say if the kid can go sub 4, let him do it. Get legendary status and then move on with the long plan.

Let the kid be a kid. Going for sub-4 in the next few months is not going to kill his long term career.

I interpreted Mike's comments as they have goals that are beyond just breaking four in HS, goals that are in the longer term. Of course, many of the pencil-dork trolls on this site would consider THAT as being even more "arrogant". I can only pity the personal deficits of self-esteem these people must wallow in.

The two best internationally competitive milers from the U.S. are Leo and Centro. Grant has already surpassed their HS times. It's a good bet that he can match or surpass their achievements with a little grace from Lady Luck and the kind of excellent coaching he has received so far.

I have noted those traits in a greater preponderance of high school coaches than I have in private coaches. And none of the private coaches I have interacted with have been as immature and disrespectful as you have been in this thread, "Donger".

It really does baffle me how people feel the need to come to a website and spew ignorant hatred towards someone they know absolutely nothing about.

DFisher is right....."What is the point?". It only goes to show how miserable of a person you must be.

What Scannell has done an amazing job of (if you actually bothered to read the article and some previous ones on Mike & Grant) is managing Grant's investment in what it is to be a runner.

He's not running high mileage, he's not doing super tough anaerobic workouts.....he supported his decision to continue with soccer when it was already clear that he was a running world beater.

Mike has encouraged Grant to have a life outside of running and be a well rounded diverse individual. For all you stupid trolls out there......That very well may be the biggest reason for his success. Imagine how many kids that show special talent like Grant get over-trained, over-coached, over-managed and over-hyped. The expectations and pressure become too much very quickly for a teenager. If any of you stupid trolls had gotten your ignorant hands on GF you probably would have ruined him by now.

So instead of praising Scannell and his wise and thoughtful (and by the way very effective) efforts in bringing Grant along.....you write mean things about him on the internet and call him arrogant.....HAHA....such losers.

If you feel so entitled to watch the next HS kid break 4 minutes for the mile then go find a kid to coach and do it yourself.....Good luck morons.....I just feel sorry for the kid.

Original poster is over the top and wrong. The personal remarks, insults are uncalled for and embarassing to LRC.

But realize why this thread probably came about. People are passionate about the running the mile. There is nothing more exciting about a 3:5x mile. The OP took his frustration with not seeing it way too far?

He could have just said he was disappointed about not seeing an attempt.

After the coach explained his reasoning, it makes sense, but it doesn't diminish the disappointment of not seeing a sub4 race. But that's our problem as fans, not the coach's problem.

So OP should apologize to the coach. They've been honest and very considerate.

What's important is the athletes career and what's best for them.

We're disappointed we haven't seen what Rupp could do in the marathon either. People want him to move up all the time. But there is no need for insults or second guessing because they don't do what fans want.

This is Letsrun and it will NEVER change as people, like you and me, post anonymously all the time. The difference is that we don't spew hatred and slanderous comments, but there's dozens and dozens that always will. It will never change. Sometimes I believe a lot of it is truly an inside job to create traffic.

I stand by my observation. And yes, school coaches can be pretty arrogant themselves.

But I am curious why no one has answered my questions. Does Grant Fisher train with his high school team? Who is his HS coach? Do they work together?

If he does awesome. But let's step aside from Fisher and talk about the private clubs for a minute. Too many runners go train on their own, with their private group then expect to race with the school "team." There are plenty of club races, go do those. Too good to train with the team but racing is ok?

There are HS kids on club and Acadamy level soccer but they don't play. You can't just show up on game day. Yet here, in the sport of cross country it is ok?

I don't understand the love of this type of sports culture. The value of team to me is invaluable. As for Fisher he would have been national champ if his Dad coached him or if he was self coached. So let's be real here.

But if anyone has answers to my questions or an explanation of how they can support the private coaching system the leeches off the public school system is love to hear it.

Does the article not say that Scannell meets with all of his athletes twice during the school week very early in the morning and once on weekends? It might be a different article I read but I was pretty sure it was in the most recent article that everyone has been referencing for this discussion.

Soooo, Donker it would appear that Fisher is available and willing to practice with his team after school Monday-Friday. Does that give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside that they can all be one big happy family?

Coaches like you irritate me to no end. I've seen many talented distance runners fight for their rights to be trained privately in the offices of the county Board of Education because some total retard of a teacher/XC Track coach was making it impossible for them to reach their potential. Thus denying them the possibility for a college scholarship that they may have otherwise attained.

I'm not so mad that the teacher/coach is total incompetent and doesn't understand anything about running and is just there to kill an hour or two while picking up an extra check....I get that. What really pisses me off is that the same moron will have such an ego and an unwillingness to admit his own shortcomings that they actively fight to deny children what they know in the heart will benefit that child the most. These people (I've run into many over the years) are some of the most disgusting ego maniacs I've ever had the displeasure of encountering in my life. You sound like one too.

How are runners with private coaches leeching off the public system any more than a runner that trains with the team everyday? The athlete with a private coach has parents that pay local taxes/tuition just as the other runners' parents. If anything, they are leeching less because they are paying for coaching in addition to these taxes/tuition whereas other runners are requiring the talents of a stipened paid school coach.
