What has been the WORST MISTAKE of YOUR LIFE?

I was offered a full ride (not athletics related) to attend Florida State University, but decided to go to IU instead with a partial scholarship. Ended up leaving IU after 2 years when I decided my major wasn't for me and racking up 36k in debt. I just graduated from college and my debt has ballooned to over 44k.

Maybe,Staying with my high school boyfriend for as long as I did. We started dating my sophomore year and I didn't have a lot of previous dating experience. He was a senior so to me that was impressive and I never really thought people would want to date me. We dated for three years and I don't know why because from the beginning he was completely controlling and insanely jealous. By my senior year of high school I didn't have any real friend because he made me feel horrible about hanging out with anybody who wasn't him. He also hated that I loved running, because he thought I cared about it more than him. I almost didn't continue running in college because I was so afraid he would be mad at me.

But I end up moving away and running in college. I ended up breaking up with him about a month into my freshman year because he was still trying to control my life and keep me from having friends even though I was away. I still have gotten to experience college like a normal person, but most of my high school was wiped out.

My HS gf became my lifelong best friend. Even in HS we knew we were not really that 'perfect couple' the outside world saw. We were more accurately incestuous brother and sister and loved knowing it.

I was a serial monogamist and she a serial marrier. When we both were between we would end up together for a bit. Never crossed the line when we were with someone but fked like mad when we were free.

John and Ann our favorite HS double date couple have been married since '63. Still in love work their own business together have slept in the same bed virtually every night since he got back from Vietnam.

HS romances can work. But I agree in general that most hs loves are a passing fancy soon outgrown.

Don't expect many here to understand...

Biggest regret is not doing EPO like my friends were. They are still racing professionally. I didn't understand how to play the game. It's different behind the scenes. Live and learn.

Definitely my high school girlfriend. We were just so incompatible, but the passion was insane. I couldn't stand her and ended up resenting her and our relationship was so tumultuous and dramatic. I sunk two years into that relationship and lost nearly all my friends--besides a very good three. I realized that I made no friends or relationships over those two years, but lost out on many. Fate would have it that we were forced to break up about half way through senior year because people around us saw how unhealthy it was... she wanted to get back together in college and ended up deciding to attend a school about five minutes away from me after we broke up, then we finally realized it was for the best and she found another guy quickly, who cheated on his girlfriend at the time with her then left the girlfriend for my ex and I had a voluntary hiatus from dating and it focused on school, improving my social surrounding and running. That spring season I tore it up on the track and pr'ed in every event and rubbed it in her face because she was the top girl runner and did miserably. That girl has effectively hit the deep end and I found a hot european mid-d runner ;) HS dating is stupid.

The worst decision i ever made was giving up running to join the Army. The army did actually help me change my entire mentallity towards running.

Studying Business Administration instead of engineering because i assumed i was too dumb for it, because i played video games all day in school and never learnt. Now im stuck with twaddlers and rip-off merchants and it turns out that i can be pretty good at math and technical stuff, if i actually spend some time learning.

Young lads, don't be afraid of challenges. If you study hard anything is possible.

walking into a bookies on my local high street one day, when I was around 17 years old. No particular reason, just curiosity and boredom. Cue 15 years worth of hellish struggles with gambling addiction, losing pretty much everything both materially and figuratively ..... coming out the other side now, but still finding it very hard to stay away. I have support networks in place but it still hangs over me like a huge, black cloud every day.

so yes, undoubtedly that one moment had a profound effect on the course my life took. In reality, it probably would've happened anyway at some time or another, but you get my point.

Getting MS and PhD in a dying field. I spent ten very long years scraping by on temporary contracts that were hard work and low pay before getting a real job.

Just wait until you're finished and look at your dwindling career options. Then you will learn more about what it means to be stuck.

Going to law school directly from undergrad without knowing anything about what practicing law is like.

I worked BigLaw for a few years after I graduated, hated every minute of it, then spent the past 5 years starting over, figuring out what I want to do, and rebuilding, which will require more grad school. I will be mid/late 30s by the time I get on a career path that suits my personality / interests.
