If you are racing someone that has better speed than you, and you are running at a pace that is relatively slow, and this person is with you at the end of the race, they will outkick you.
If you want to beat this person, you need to soften them up with a faster pace. This will reduce their kick.

Gonchar, you're one of the worst posters in the history of letsrun. There was no good point, it's a fit Lalang we have here. It has nothing to do with pace and everything to do with Lalang being fit unlike Indoors where he had a setback mid season. Ask anyone on our team, he got dusted indoors because he wasn't himself. Once he got fully healthy he's virtually unstoppable on this level at any distance. These are facts. He'd have beat Cheserek on a slow pace as well, which for a fit Lalang this was a slow pace.

Even a thread about a stirring race between a couple of the best distance runners ever to grace the NCAA goes to utter, pointless shit as a result of amazingly juvenile, mindless bickering.
Requiring registration for the board would do away with at least half of this garbage and probably closer to two-thirds. People could remain just as anonymous as they do now, but the tide of bullshit would lessen in force because all but a few people would not be motivated to register a dozen accounts just to be pains in the ass.
Amazingly, this could be done for FREE. Yet these guys are just too naive and seem caught up in the demonstrably stupid idea that an unchecked free-for-all is by definition the best of all boards because anyone can and will have a say.
I am a volunteer assistant coach at a school with a decent program and I can tell you that for every NCAA athlete or coach who is able to tolerate Letsrun, at least two actively hate it, mostly on the women's side. The reasons are understandable.
Anyway, Cheserek seems more competitive at heart than he did in high school, like the fire is burning hotter every time out. He seems to be enjoying himself greatly. He'll own at least two NCAA records within a few years, maybe more given that he will always have a great supporting cast at Oregon (think relays).

I'm not sure what else you can say other than this was a great race, between great competitors, where each athlete laid it all out on the track. It was a fast race, but not a time trial race. For me it doesn't get much better. There are a lot of factors that influence race outcomes (leading, previous races, etc), but I think some are completely over analyzing an amazing 5k where two guys went to the well from start to finish and were within a half second at the line. I'm just glad I got to watch it.

As several others have pointed out using actually logic, running a race at a much faster effort will lead to a slower last lap. That's basic track 101 and is incredibly stupid to state. The fact that someone else closed faster does not mean you're better or worse off a fast pace, it can just simply mean the other guy is better. Lawi being the best miler in the NCAA would suggest he can do pretty well off a slow pace as well.

What made this race much more exciting than the 10k was the drama over the last lap. The 10k(right or wrong) most people watching could predict that Ches was going to destroy the comp off the pace they were running. However with the pace, and last mile increase of the 5k, then it became a race for the ages!
