Examples of cover songs better than the original

Who said Areosmith's version of "come together" is better then he Beatles? You've got to be kidding. I put that song on when I want to vomit. In my opinion it is one of the WORST covers of all time.

And I stand by my Blue Monday statement. The originally is kinda dull, drags (it's like 7 minutes long!) and just dry. Orgy actually puts some life into the song, cuts the length almost in half, makes it much more interesting and intense.

The Byrds did a good cover of Ecclesiastes 3.

Jason and the Scorchers "19th Nervous Breakdown" is a pretty rocking cover.

I prefer Jeff Healey's version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps

anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes since they are just a cover band

"Psalm 69" Jethro Tull->Overkill

I can't remember who I heard cover "We Care a lot" by Faith No More but it was really good

"(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone" The Monkees->Sex Pistols

The NOFX/Rancid album where they cover each other's songs was great

I heard Pennywise cover Sublime's "Same in the End" live the summer after Bradley Nowell died

"Paranoid" Black Sabbath->Megadeth

and since it is the playoffs...The Dropkick Murphys cover of "Tessie" which was last played during the 1918 season...Go Sox!

I am not a big Rod Stewart fan, but "Forever Young" is my favorite from him and one of my favorite songs, period.

You mentioned Jethro Tull. Iron Maiden has a good cover of Cross-Eyed Mary.

\"Fell In Love With A Boy\" by Joss Stone. Much better than \"Fell In Love With A Girl\" by whoever that band was. Her voice is sexy and Jazzy.

Not really a cover because the original is a folk standard, but who's heard the Blind Boys of Alabama do Amazing Grace to the music of House of the Rising Sun?

Baker Street by The Foo Fighters is the best cover there has been

Sam Phillips also did a great version of Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth"...although I still prefer the original.

Going way way back, Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia" improves on the Tony Joe White original.

I thought Minor Threat covered "Stepping Stone", not the Sex Pistols.

Actually Dave does that song the best jackass. It's just true, he's got a better voice than either Dylan or Hendrix (both of whom I do like), and they just put that song together very well.

That is a great cover!! I don't particularly like No Doubt, but their cover of "It's My Life", originally done by Talk Talk, is outstanding.

I also prefer Jane's Addiction's cover of "Rock and Roll" to Velvet Underground's.

You're nuts. That was a commercial piece of crap with no interpretation or musical value added, just Gwen's voice dubbed in. It did not improve the original at all. The sound of the cash register ching-ching.

Some songs date back so far that it's hard to say exactly whose version is being covered. But I always thought "Long Black Veil" by The Band was better than any of the earlier ones, including Johnny Cash's, or the later ones, including The Chieftains'.

I'm quite fond of Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart's "People Get Ready," although I've only heard Curtis Mayfield's once, so I don't have a real feel for it.

Nazareth's "Love Hurts" is better than the Everly Brother's original.

Warren Zevon's "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" beats Linda Ronstadt's.
