Inside Man....any insight on candidates in the coaching search. I wonder if there is any discussion on combining the men's and women's coaching programs internally. Let McGuire (I know...he's never coached a men's team) handle the mid-distance duties and hire a long distance coach.

So then why not interview Gibby about the coaching situation. Then interview Mason about his race and if you had already confirmed the coaching situation ask him if the change had affected his preparation or racing?
This is the perfect example of BCS conference mentality being carried out on all sports at a school. Michigan has let go of a lot of coaches across the board the past few years. The new head track coach was brought in to improve the track team, and this year they finished at the bottom of big 10s indoors and out. He obviously doesn't want to lose his job in the future, so decided to make changes early in his time in Ann Arbor. Gibby did a good job with the Cross Country team, but the Big 10 is a very tough conference to score well on the track with no middle distance guys.
Hopefully Gibby can find a position that fits his strengths. Distance focus in a small conference.
This can't be easy on the athletes, the assistants or his wife who has infants twins at home.

The time and place for asking Ferlic that question weren't fantastic, but my main problem is with Rojo's tone and the fact that he persisted after the kid clearly did not want to discuss it. It smacked of professional jealousy. Perhaps Rojo recalls when William and Mary consistently cleaned his clock. Remember that hilarious 'I will resign if Cornell isn't top 10 at NCAA XC' pledge he made when he took the job? How'd that work out? I'd like to see Rojo the hard-hitting journalist ask himself those questions. Link that video when he does it, please. I'll be waiting.

Because that would involve actually having the guts to confront a real coach with strong credentials and experience handling "the media" instead of getting a juicy scoop from a college kid who's focused on trying to run well.
The fact that Clayton was hired after Gibby was already in place probably did not help the situation. Always difficult when the head coach is not the one who hired the assistants. I also wonder if the rumors about the initial tough transition when Gibby was hired (bad-mouthing Ron, etc) didn't hurt his time at Michigan. If I remember correctly, the Wisconsin coach specifically mentioned that he was glad it was Indiana and not Gibby/Michigan that broke the Wisconsin string of Big 10 titles in cross. Good luck to Gibby if the rumors prove to be true. I hope Michigan makes a home run hire and get Fisher to commit next year. If they can retain their runners, they have a strong roster for next year in cross and the 5k/10k/steeple.

Sorry if I implied that a coaching change would affect Fisher. I really just meant to say that adding Fisher to a fairly strong group of cross country/distance track guys would be an excellent start for a potential new coach. I have NO idea if Fisher is at all interested in Michigan. Just commenting since he's an in-state guy and another thread commented that he's a strong student.

She coaches the Air Force men, the Air Force distance job just came open. Also, she has connections to the area because she coached Kevin Sullivan post-collegiately. It's just an educated guess... But she has coached men for quite a while.
Juli did a great job with the air force men. Is it official Gibby is out or no? Everyone acts like its a done deal already.

1. This isn't a rumor. It's truth and I had it confirmed by sources i trust.
2. How many times do I have to state it? I didn't ask Ferlic if Gibby was gone. I knew that to be the case and assumed (incorrectly) that he knew as well. It didn't cross my mind that the head coach or Gibby wouldn't have told the team yet adult in Eugene over the age of 25 seemingly knew it to be true. I simply asked him who was coaching him as I thought it was interesting to find out if he had a new coach or not.
It clearly didn't faze him or ruin him. He ran just fine.

I didn't persist with anything. I asked him who was coaching him. He said that was a rumor that should be discounted and I simply told him I had good sources telling me it was true. I didn't pursue it any further.
After the final, I apologized for being the one to end up to telling him. He asked me not to ask him on camera about it and I didn't.
