Rupp officially in the 10K at Pre!!

I think the entire field should just run 10 meters behind Rupp the whole way, that way there can't be any DQ disputes. That, or everyone runs in lane 2-3 while Rupp gets 1. Either way, DON'T TOUCH RUPP.

Maybe Ventolin has some mathematics we can factor in, assuming that 2014 Rupp is indeed faster than 2011 (26:48) Rupp as I am.

I see Sam Chelanga is also in the 10K. His 27:08 is an old mark from when Solinsky ran 26:59. Considering his 13:04 indoors this year, he may be a candidate for sub 27:00. Supposed to hit 80 in Eugene on Friday and be partly cloudy. That could be perfect for late evening 10,000. Curious to know who is rabbiting. What they should do is offer a bonus to anyone under 26:50 and a better bonus for anyone under 26:45. Maybe $3,000 and $6,000. That would be something to motivate guys from backing off and saving up for a kick on 6-9K.

Based on how Rupp looked in his last race I would say he will not threaten the AR with this type of race that is setup, and that 27:40 would not be a tempo run for him.

I will be surprised if the winner runs in the 26:50s.

Unlike all of you guessers, I actually took time out and calculated the pace

26:48-25x2 is 12:58 which 4:09 pace + 25 = 4:34 x 6.2 = 28:18!

28:18 is a tempo run for Rupp, on up to 29 would still give him a little workout, but any faster would be stressing his system

Most of you are going by what he can stay relaxed at, just cause he looks relaxed going a certain pace in a race doesn't mean he's doing a tempo pace for himself... 28:18!

People are really not understanding that opener for Rupp. In the last 5 years how many times did Salazar say they were going for an AR? How many times did they fall way short?

By my recollection that would be 0. They did not say he was going for an AR here, but it is certainly implied that they are looking for sub 27:00. It would be a first if they fall way short.

27:40 is definitely not a tempo pace for Rupp, and running 27:40 solo is definitely not a tempo.

Rupp's tempo pace is likely about 4:32-4:25, which is 28:29 10k pace, or 59:42 half-marathon pace. He could probably hold that for another 18 seconds, i.e., 1 hour race pace.

He is definitely better now than in September 2011, when he ran 26:48. The only thing I wonder is if he is fit enough this early to go for a fast time.

After indoors, Alberto's athletes take 2 weeks completely off, then jog easy for 2 weeks. Then the first 4 weeks or so are what he calls "moderate". This is what he said when describing the structure of his athletes training.

That means Rupp has had less than 4 weeks of "hard" training. Maybe they changed the formula for this record attempt. I suppose we'll see.

I think the race will probably be disappointingly slow for Galen, I think if he had run a little faster in that 5k or a fast 1500 he'd have some confidence. Also, personally whenever I hope Rupp can run really fast I usually get let down but when I don't expect anything impressive from him, he runs 26:48. Hopefully he can prove me wrong again, if we see indoor track Rupp we could see a sub 26:40

First of all, let's hope he will cross the line first.

Just out of curiosity, why do you reference a half marathon for estabishing tempo for 10K?

I ran for a D1 college, and our coach would have us do "tempo" runs of 3-4 miles in the morning, usually at 5:00 - 5:20 pace. We would do a track workout that afternoon. I was a 1500 guy, but to me "tempo" never had anything to do with a half marathon. I alwasy thought of it as a controlled fast run, steady pace, but leaving something in the tank.

I was using Jack Daniel's definition, 1 hour race pace, or lactate threshold as he terms it. For elite male distance runners, this is usually close to half-marathon race pace.

I agree with you that tempo runs are best done by feel. I was just using it as a frame of reference.

I see, thanks. I suppose this is where the confusion lies on whether Galen could "tempo" a 27:40.

I agree with others that Galen could run 27:40 and make it look easy, and he could probably go several more laps at that pace. He could probably do it at the Nike track with just Salazar on the watch. When you are a strength oriented runner and in shape for 13:00 or so, 13:50 will feel pretty easy. Truth is, I could see Chelanga doing the same. Call that what you will :-)

Lactate treshold isn't one pace, it differs from the distance you run. Stay at about 3.5 in mmol and its lactate threshold, you can stay at that lactate in far higher speeds if the run is shorter.
