Weak Sauce: Mary Cain May Duck The Competition At Pre

The difference is Cranny is a high schooler who is race fit. She has nothing to lose and everything to gain racing pros of this caliber. She's not going to compete with them, she'll just try to let them pull her to a new pr. Cain on the other hand is a pro who is not race fit. She has everything to lose and nothing to gain racing pros of this caliber while not fit. Pros race. They do not trail behind hoping for a fast time. If Cain got overagressive and ran with the leaders she could blow up and lose to Cranny. Wouldn't that be a great start for her pro career?

If you're not in shape not run the 15, you're not in any much better shape for the 8, I just think that Salazar would get a not so nice email from Nike and USATF if teen phenom Mary Cain didn't run at all...

I'd say she needs to run it, think about this:

David Rudisha after a 53 weeks is coming back for his debut, Cain's injury lasted like 2 weeks... He said "I'm going to front run, looking for around a 1:44, might get 3rd or 4th", why can't this be the same case for Cain? She doesn't have to finish top 3 every time, whether she's in peak 15 form or not, she has a great opportunity to run against the best like Rudisha is going and she needs to take it and if Cranny beats her, she does does, if Rupp gets beat by True, he just does... Just go back home and get back to the training, this isn't the world champs and it's not a career defining meet especially for Cain, she's a teenager!

Poor coaching. This puts anxiety into her head, as if she shouldn't race certain events if she doesn't think she can win. It's OK to race yourself into shape, although beginning that process at one of the biggest meets in North America is questionable.

Others who have said she's a once in a century athlete, I'll agree with that when she goes 9 years 9 months and 10 days without a loss.

If you found 9, just off the top of you head, how can they be "once" in a century?

Again - to beat over the heads of idiotic, completely moronic Americans - her priority this year is WORLD JUNIORS. It is her only year left for this meet.

She has yet to medal at any meaningful meet (US champs have no meaning other than to make teams - ask Webb how great his International championship career was outside of US Nationals), and this is her opportunity IN THE USA for pete's sake, even in tracktown no less (any other priority this year is simply misdirected). She can run Prefonraine or Senior Worlds/Olympics , etc. for the next 10 years or more. Just because she is now a Pro means nothing and the USATF certainly doesn't care if she runs this meet, they should be more concerned that she lines up in Eugene in July healthy and ready to race. She might get pasted by Aregawi, but if she loses World Juniors, then Salazar should be fired as her coach.

It is a new game--keep your fans guessing and in suspense! Like Let's Make a Deal--Door #1 or Door #2 lol

Excellent effort - silver medal for most absurd post in this absurd thread behind Mary Duck about how an 18 yr old athlete has responsibility for her coach's decisions. Ok, I know some of you view 2nd place as first loser, but I think voidsix has real potential for future gold medal absurdity efforts.

Alberto isn't going to send Cain out in this 1500m if he can't outline a sensible race plan for her to compete with the lead pack, and I don't see the lead pack hitting the bell in anything over 3 flat [48 + 66 + 66 = 3 flat, and I just don't see Aregawi + Obiri + Kipyegon going any slower than that; in fact, I could see them going a good bit faster.]

If Cain's workouts suggest she's ready to run 1100m in 3 flat or better + run some kind of competent last 400m - under 65 - I think he'll have her run the 1500m, but that basically means she's in PR shape.

If her workouts don't suggest she's ready to run that kind of 1500m time, he'll have her get back into racing by running the 800m in a race where she can go out in 60 and fight for ever second she can get in the second lap against a field where she'll probably have people to compete with. I think that kind of 800m would give Salazar [and Cain] more insight into where her race fitness stands than would a 1500m in which she's off the back of the lead pack before the real racing begins.

Ok, you are, of course, still free to think I'm a moron, but there you have my point of view.

You get it! I think Mary will become like Rupp at the end; a really really great athlete who never fully develops to their best because the coach is always trying to manufacturer the best scenarios. Of course every couch should watch out for their athletes but Alberto's overprotection (to me) seems counteractive. For example, Farah, for whatever reason has been out more than Rupp and has his fair share of wins and glory. However, Rupp, with all the controlled situations, only comes second to Farah. I say, let them run and let what be be. I will change my opinion when both Mary and Rupp become international legends.
