The use of the term 'thon makes you a hobby jogger and trying way too hard to be "cool"

runners:

1) put themselves in extremely uncomfortable places 1-3 times a week during training with the intent of getting faster.

2) care about times/place and are pissed when the time/place in their last race didn't meet their expectations.

Maybe a bit OT, but does anybody know where the preconception of the "pale runner" comes from?

I totally understand "skinny" and "socially awkward", which I also guess many of us have experienced this first hand.

But Come on, why would somebody who spends countless hours outdoors be pale?

I've never seen such a runner in my whole life.

The runner's goal is to get faster. Their plans are a structured training plan to make them get faster.

The hobby jogger's goal is also to get faster. But their plans never change from "try harder next jog," or adding the odd tempo/interval run they threw in randomly due to reading an article at RW.

I agree. I've met a lot of runners, a decent amount are socially awkward (ok well the majority), but I've met very few pale ones, if any. Except one albino kid. He was VERY pale.

this^^ is the definition of a HobbyJogger

I've learned from this forum that a runner:

1. is obsessed with hobbyjoggers

2. hates hobby joggers

3. derives their entire self worth from not being a hobbyjogger

4. cares very deeply about what hobbyjoggers do

5. has no other interest beyond criticizing hobbyjoggers

Appearance-motivated and lazy healthrunner:

1. Run for physiological effects on your body

-weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, blood cholesterol

-bone and muscle strength

2. Maximum effect from the lowest adequate amount of training

- about 20 miles per week

- low calorie diet reduces the amount of training needed

3. Who cares about PR:s?

-home monitoring of weight, waist size, body fat, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol

-visual body evaluation regularly with whole body mirror

4. Enter various events wearing good looking clothes

-runner's body looks very good in nice clothes

-nobody can really tell that you are only running 20 miles per week

I mean, technically, we're all hobbyjoggers. None of us is getting paid to do this. Doesn't that mean that by definition, this is a hobby for us? Whether "competing to improve" means to get faster or to just finish, I don't really see how it's different. You're either getting paid for what you do, and it's your job, or you're not getting paid, and it's your hobby.

Awesome! It's about time someone said this. Especially #3 I'd love to see the race times of these awesome anti-hobbyjoggers. What are you people over-compensating for?

How amazing and said that any of you care about who is and isn't a hobbyjogger.

Find satisfaction and fulfillment in your own running. Come on already.
