As a coach, and graduate of NAU, I have to feel bad for Coach Mann. I'm sure even after all these years, he is not very proud of how one of his best athletes turned out after spending a lot of time with him and thinking he had a positive influence and possibly always supporting him in coaching. Then again, maybe he knew Reed's character may have been flawed even back then.

The law is as it is for many reasons regardless of how many teens and pre-teens are already shagging before they turn 18. One being physical health for females that have sex at an early age. Another might be trying to protect children from having unwanted children by adults who will not take care of them. Another might be to reduce the frequency of this happening in the first place whether you think it's right or wrong. I have taught and coached for 25 years and can't think of one person in that time that was ready to have the burden or responsiblility of having babies at that age. How many of the adult perps want to marry and raise a family with the teenager? How many teenagers' parents want to support this behavior of adults that know better? It's bad enough worrying about the fact that teenagers will have unprotected sex if not educated about the consequences that come along with it when they aren't in a position to make adult decisions for themselves. The parents of the female victim end up picking up the pieces the rest of their lives along with the teens, not the offending male adult.

You supporters of this behavior can slice it any way you want to but when your own children get caught up in something like this I'm betting you won't be too interested in how much this is going to wreck the perp's life since your own child's life will be pretty much in recovery mode before it ever gets started. You are the losers that the majority wants these laws in place for. See if you can possibly take an interest in a consenting adult that has similar interests as yourself and the ability to make adult decisions.

I'm guessing many of you supporters were victims of some kind of abuse yourself and haven't every come to grips with the fact that it was wrong when it happened to you and you just can't cope so you tell yourselves it's ok. Good luck with that train of thought but I can gaurantee that if you come across the wrong parent of some underaged target of yours, you may end up with a walking disorder and possibly taking a long dirt nap shortly afterwards.

Absolutely. They abdicated their role as the adult in the relationship. The adult should shut it down early, no texts, no emails, no phone calls etc..

I'm not saying what these guys did was right. I'm just saying that I can see how it happens. It's (sex between coach & athlete) so common in swimming, T&F, & gymnastics that I'd almost advocate that we go back to women coaching girls or at least have a female assistant coach present at all times.

any late 40s guy that goes after 17 year olds deserves to be named and shamed. they are young enough to be your daughter. you are also in a position of trust or power over them as their coach. you are taking advantage of a hormonal teenager when you really should know better. in the uk if you sleep with someone even that is 18 and you are a teacher for example due to your abuse of trust/ power you will have to sign the sex offenders register. and rightly so in my opinion

Not to excuse the behavior but I can see how these incidents happen. When I was student teaching, a HS senior girl (18 years old, just moved into the district, didn't know anyone at new school, boys were intimidated by how smart she was and by her looks) was crushed on me, her English teacher. She cut out a small square in the crotch of her jeans and sat with her legs provocatively spread in the front row of my class, quite a sight to behold. It was a very difficult situation to be in. Her mother was an alcoholic and she actually pushed hard for her daughter and I to be in a relationship. It was a rural area of only 600 people and I knew I would probably get caught. It was not easy holding off on the temptation. She was physically stunning and a lot more mature than I was at the time. I spent considerable time thinking about whether I should cross that line that semester. Any hetero guy with a pulse would have banged her. The only guy she liked at that school was me. She had waitressed and washed dishes after school for years to help pay the mortgage and also support her special needs younger brother. When the mother is saying "I want you to be in a relationship with my daughter" and she's been supporting her family for several years, someone who would have been an internet porn sensation, someone with a 150 IQ, someone with lovely green eyes who sees what she wants and boldly goes after it... some guys would definitely to succumb to all that.

Sorry for the typo. Some people may call me a scumbag for contemplating crossing the line with that girl. But really, when the mother of the girl invites me over to their trailer for Thanksgiving so "you and Tammy can hang out", a lot of you naysayers would have jumped at that invitation. Bo Reed may be a predator but I definitely wasn't. I forced myself to hurt a hot babe who loved me and it was not easy.

If she really was as bright as you claim, she would have shunned you for writing a sentence like this. "Pushed hard for her daughter and I"? English teacher? You should have been run out of town for your grammar, not your designs on a school girl.

With all that the particular young lady you describe had been through, yes, it would have been absolutely inexcusable to take advantage of her. She obviously had to deal with a great deal - alcoholic mother, supporting the family, and it sounds like there was no father in her life. She was a vulnerable, probably lonely - if new to the school, and STILL only 18 years old. Just because a girl is physically developed at 18, doesn't mean she is emotionally mature. If she truly was a lot "more mature" than you at the time, that is pathetic. No wonder you had a difficult time resisting temptation. Hope none of my kid's teachers are less mature than they are.

It was a small K-12 school in New Mexico. The population of the town was the same amount of people who lived in Shirley Jackson's town in "The Lottery". On the first day of school, we all were in the gymnasium waiting for instructions as to where to go. Tammy was standing alone, apart from everyone, and I chatted her up thinking she was another faculty member. She always like to tease me about that.

I agree people don't always make mature decisions. That is why we have a legal system to hold those who cross the line accountable for their actions.

It's that teen ass which is so addicting, not the age or the maturity girls. A firm body of a legal teen (18-19) is so enticing that even the men with the highest moral aptitude will succumb to instinct. It is perfectly natural for older men to be attracted to younger women and this is prevalent throughout the history of civilizations.

Not to go off on a long rant inexcusable but I hope you will rethink your statement about hoping your child's educators are more than they are. Do be diligent.

My first full-time teaching job was on a reservation in New Mexico. Teacher housing was a big semi-circle as the street from the school. Two doors down from me was a guy named David, a special ed teacher who had been at the school for many years. David was a gay man who lived with his dogs. Boys were in and out of his place all day and all night. None were ever older than fifteen years old. I was one of nine Anglos who worked on the rez. None of us had the power to change anything there. There was a male detention hall monitor who had about two teeth and who often reeked of alcohol. No parent would ever want his daughter alone with Jimmy in a small closet-sized detention space but Jimmy had family connections at the school and he had job security.

When I taught on the Oregon coast, I replaced a female teacher who resigned at Christmas break for having a relationship with a male high school junior. A lot of juniors and seniors knew about the relationship and were fully in approval. A lot of other students were aghast that a lot of people thought they were a good couple. The teacher had partied with her students on the weekends. That scandal tore that community apart. As an interim replacement teacher that spring, a lot of my students were still grieving over the fact Ms. X has to resign so abruptly.

When I taught in central Oregon, my district superintendent was fired for selling surplus school carpeting and office furniture at a Saturday flea market on the other side of the mountain.

When I taught near Pendleton, Oregon our union treasurer (a teacher) made off with $10,000 of union dues and spent it all in Hawaii. She had to resign and face criminal charges.

When I taught in Colorado, our school always had "Pajama Day". This involved kids wearing pajamas all day at school and then running all over town in their PJ's after school. A male teacher right next door was fired for inappropriately touching female students on Pajama Day.

I also worked with a 28 year male teacher who was falsely accused of being in an inappropriate relationship with a student. After he was acquitted he went back to teaching. But he was never the same again.

Mature decisions are not always made in schools. They can be rough places.
